No Jim Martin? Well, you want it all, but I guess you can't have it.
Yeah, but at least Steve Dave made a surprise appearance.

it's been a Bad Brains morning at my computer today.

A few people have walked by, kinda poked their ear near my computer, and gave this "WTF" look at me. It's not too loud but it's noticable when you walk by.

Another reason why The Bronx are awesome.

Seriously, how many bands would come up with a Mariachi alter-ego and it actually be good?

I'm sorry, but people who "understand true music" are people who hear any music and are genuinely moved by it, whether it's sitting back and stroking their lame facial hair or boogeying on a dance floor. it's art. it's supposed to enrich your life and give you some insight into the world we are forced to live in. it's not a hammer than should be used to try to make other people see how much smarter you are than them.

some people actually listen to the mahavishnu orchestra and the information society and get something wonderful from both.
Well, the way I see it is that many people really do not understand music. I mean, put someone in front of a John Coltrane piece and they're going to cover their ears. Put a simple dance groove on and a girl will dance to it. They don't teach you about the art of music when you're young. I remember back in college, I had a music class ran by a trumpet player that played with Ella Fitzgerald and the way most classes went was that he'd put on an entire jazz or classical piece and we'd listen to it. He would describe things before and after and he would make us understand how to listen to it. At first, as you can imagine, some people were not into this kind of music and were kinda laughing, but I swear that by the end of the course everyone seemed into it and definitely took it seriously.

I had a book once, a music book, with this little cartoon that really stuck with me. It had a little girl sitting down on the floor, listening to a classical piece and another girl walked up to her and asked her what she's doing. The girl said she was listening to music. The other one couldn't understand why she was just sitting there and kept asking her... well, what do you do to it? Do you dance to it? "No". Do you march to it? "No". People aren't taught to appreciate music, which is why Lady Gaga and Madonna sell so many records.

Maybe I'm a snob, but I have no problem with that. You're not going to compare Jessica Simpson or whatever crap to Bach or Miles Davis or a quality Rock band like Thin Lizzy or Deep Purple. There is good music and bad music. With talent or without, whether instrumental skill or as a songwriter. I have no problem saying that. We can discuss people's personal taste, and that's a valid point, but some people clearly have some really BAD TASTE out there.

We can discuss this some more, but this is the first time I've been home in two weeks and I'm leaving for Germany later and won't be back for a while again. So maybe another time.

either way, it all good. by the way, I think return to forever is kind of lame proto-new age music, to be honest. go with mahavishnu orchestra if you want the real deal.
Well, I'm not going to discuss THAT. I don't see the need. If you look them up anywhere on the web, you see they are one of the most respected and cherished fusion groups. Top 3 best - all time. I started looking at this stuff in 1990 (a breakthrough year for me where I got sick of metal for a few years and started listening to Classical mostly, then Jazz) and, to this day, I have never heard any Jazz or Rock fan refer to this group as lame.

MO are a harder group to listen to, IMO. I think RTF are more accessible to most people.

I went on a Bad Brains binge a fee weeks back and it's all I listened to for 3 days. Love the group, especially the early stuff. There is something about the I Against I record that just has such a hold on me. At first I wasn't sure what to think of it, compared to the previous two, but it quickly grew on me and I just can't get enough of the sound and the overall mood of it.

If you get into this stuff, go to Amazon and order all their CDs. I think they have 7 studio albums. They of course have had countless other projects, solo or with other groups spanning decades. Al Di Meola was also part of the group and I think everybody knows who he is.

Here:
# Return to Forever (1972, ECM)
# Light as a Feather (1972, Polydor)
# Hymn of the Seventh Galaxy (1973, Polydor)
# Where Have I Known You Before (1974, Polydor)
# No Mystery (1975, Polydor)
# Romantic Warrior (1976, Columbia)
# Musicmagic (1977, Columbia)
Much Thanks, I will be checking out more of their stuff, I'm really digging it!
Oh, make sure to get Stanley's first album. Exactly the same stuff, with Chick on it as well, and I didn't even remember until I looked now that Dee Dee Bridgewater sang on it. One of my favorite singers. Just ignore the awful male vocals... I don't know what Stan was thinking - should have kept just Dee Dee signing.

And some of the Chick Corea albums are like this, but he has so much stuff you really need to do some research.

I was listening to them earlier today, not nearly as much as I was during my original post, and I noticed something.

I'm not sure if it's intentional or not, but there's a song on the Matrix soundtrack that sounds like they either sampled or maybe even ripped off re-ignition.

I'm about a minute from leaving work, otherwise I'd post samples.

I can go for months without listening that album and I will still hear those hooks in my head off songs like Re-ignition or Secret 77, or most of the songs, really. How about the brilliant She's Calling You. Or Sacred Love. Like I said, took me a little while to get into it, but I appreciate it more and more as the years go by. Brilliant record.

What most people who are unfamiliar with this music will find is that one of the very first, if not the first, and most beloved hardcore punk bands were... 4 black guys. Then the media took the nazi/racist/ahole label and applied it to all skinheads, where in reality that was just a very small fraction of the whole movement. Shame on them.

I've been listening to Deep Banana Blackout they have a really great live album "Rowdy Duty". If you like some good funky jazz, check them out, they put on a great live show! their guitarist (James “Fuzz” San Giovanni) also put out an awesome guitar album "B'Gock!" with his band 'On the corner with fuzz'

I've also been listening to "Euphoria" by Leftover Salmon, if you like bluegrass or cajun music, definately check these guys out.

doesn't seem like a lot of people get much into blues or jazz on here, but check em' out if you get a chance

I am REALLY digging the Leftover Salmon stuff. I'm a big Bluegrass fan and this seems to have some of that in it. I'm gonna have to do some listening when I get back.

edit: Second song sounds Latin. See, this is an artistic band. Who the hell needs crap like Lady Gaga or the moment's Pop act. Latin sound + bluegrass solo. Cool.

Yeah, they are really good musicians, they call their style "Polyethnic Cajun Slamgrass", A style of music that blends bluegrass, rock, country, blues, jazz, and Cajun/Zydeco

you can listen to a bunch of their stuff on their website http://www.leftoversalmon.com/salmon/

This is for any of the metal fans out there, anyone ever listen to Amon Amarth, my brother in law gave me an album; and they are pretty crazy. I guess their music is classified as Viking Metal? Pretty intense stuff, I actually found myself laughing at first, but now I can get into it...

Also one of my favorite metal bands ever is Alestorm, they came out with a new album recently (Black Sails at Midnight), they are a scottish pirate folk metal band (I don't know why, but i seem to follow the themed-metal bands...)

I have a great Leftover Salmon/Cracker album where they play bluegrass versions of Cracker songs...very cool. I just looked it up and it's six years old. Wow, time flies...

Listening to Kind of Blue a lot lately, too.

Features Davis and Coltrane.

Oh. My. God.

I never thought I'd see Alestorm brought up in this thread. That rules. So hard.

I got into Viking/Pirate/Folk/etc metal last year and I haven't turned back. Amon Amarth is one of the best, but check out Ensiferum and Turisas, for sure. It's a slightly different style, but Three Inches of Blood is pretty great, as well. Korpiklaani makes you just wanna drink some beers before you go out and hit someone in the face with an axe. And, as weird as this sounds, Dethklok (yeah, the cartoon band from Metalocalypse) is really entertaining. Plus, the musicianship is actually pretty darn good.

Mana anyone?

also been listening to Julieta Venegas, always like having some spanish music playing throughout the house, something relaxing about it...

Anyone ever get into Uriah Heep? Demons and Wizards is one of the greatest albums of all time, a severely underated band!

I'm on a Pat Metheny kick right now. Still Life/Letter From Home/We Live Here era. Love the guy's music and would love to see him live, but I think I'd be distracted by his perpetual "O" face while he's playing.

There are some definite future GH (or RB) songs on that CD. Morello has to be able to get that hooked up.

I've been listening to Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds this past week. I truly don't know where to begin to recommend one starts as far as songs go, though.
