Good for him. Pitt's backfield seems to be pretty crowded, borderline ridiculous as it stands right now and its only going to get more crowded next year. His decision to go elsewhere was obvious if he wanted to get significant playing time his freshman year.

I'd gloat but he'll end up with 10 carries for 17 yards against Pitt.

Our backfield already is ridiculous.

Best of luck to McKenzie at VT and I hope he does well against everyone in the ACC except for Pitt. But these comments he made after committing to VT rubbed me the wrong way:

http://www.post-gazette.com/sports/2013 ... 1312200155
"While McKenzie liked the Pitt coaching staff, the fact that the Panthers already had three running backs in their 2014 class led to what McKenzie described as some personal uncertainty.

"I'm a target in the area, a four-star guy and they go out and get three other running backs," he said. "They're good backs, but you've got somebody in your backyard, so there was a loyalty there I just wasn't very certain about."
That's a load of crap. McKenzie knew for years he was on Pitt's radar, and Pitt never lost interest after he suffered his injury. He also knew they were recruiting other backs because that's what any coach worth his salary at this level is going to do. McKenzie could've easily put it all to rest & beat either Ollison (commited in September 2013) or James (commited in November 2013) to the punch, but he didn't. Recruiting is a two-way street, and Ollison & James wanted to be here enough that they took advantage of the opportunity presented to them.

Best of luck to McKenzie, but with Conner, Bennett, Ibrahim & James in the mix this year and Ollison (assuming he redshirts), Poteat (via transfer), Lindsay & Hall in the pipeline, Pitt will be just fine.

Oh I totally agree, don't get me wrong. Just crazy how great of backfield they have WITHOUT Shell or Mckenzie. Gonna be a fun few years, I think.

Completely agree, and for the record I knew that's ultimately what you were getting at with the original post on McKenzie. If what I posted came across any other way, I apologize.

I certainly don't wish anything bad on McKenzie, other than a mediocre day when VT plays Pitt. I would never begrudge any recruit for their decision to play where they want to play because those decisions are all made for a variety of reasons that need only be valid to the recruit himself. I just thought the comments were unnecessary. There's something I didn't like about using a press conference to commit to one school as a means to slam another school that was involved in the process.

But back to Pitt, it is incredible. This is the sort of thing I really hoped Chryst would build here, as he did at Wisconsin. And if some of these younger receivers emerge opposite Boyd, holy hell.

Don't know how he can ever play defense for them. He's way too good of a running back and too important to the offense.

Voytik looks incapable of throwing to anyone but his first option.

Missed most of the first half. Seems like after a shaky start that Pitt has started to play better. Boyd is scary good, Conner is running over people, and the defense is actually playing defense. So far so good.
