At least one member of the thread is a legitimate Reading supporter  Great match - a well earned result and the scoreline definitely reflected the Royals superior play.

I am a 2010 FA Cup bandwagon Reading supporter.

My FA Cup wounds are slowly healing but today was like being in a hyperbaric chamber with stem cell injections. :D

Season over as of 1/13/10

Aquilani 120 + minutes of impotence when an offensive thrust was desperately needed.

Tears were flowing all over the stands and on the pitch. I guess the local authorities were lucky there was such a paucity of supporters in the stands or there could have been severe flooding based on the water flowing from the eyes of the few supporters that bothered to turn out and support their club that allegedly never walks alone.

Milan advanced to the quarters in the Coppa Italia with a 2-1 win over Novara. Superpippo! with the opener. SAF's bon mot that "Filippo Inzaghi was born offsides" is one of my favorite ever soccer quotes. :D

At this stage of the Euro Cup I want Milan to advance in their domestic Cup so they have potential fixture congestion and fatigue to weaken them for United.

Is Leonardo singularly focused on the Euro Cup like Ancelotti was or will he field full strength teams for League matches around Euro Cup matches?

Good result for Reading in an otherwise dismal year.

Well in recent years, Milan got off to such slow starts (with Inter flying out of the gates) that by mid-season it made more sense for them to direct their full effort to the CL. Thats not to say that Ancelotti didnt field full squads in the League games for the most part, but that in the knockout rounds, he would protect Maldini, Kaka, Pirlo, Seedorf and the like by not playing them in the Saturday/Sunday prior to a Tues/Wed CL game. Right now, Milan are 8 back with a game in hand and the derby coming up against Inter at the end of this month, so by months end, they will know if the league is a realistic goal and will dictate what Leonardo does in the coming months.

The Coppa Italia wont really impact their fatigue levels; a glance at their lineup from today shows how little they care about the competition. Leonardo rotated in 10 players that did not start in the win against Juventus (Ambrosini the lone holdover) and handed Devito his professional debut.

Donovan looks the part again today. He and that Billywhateverhisnameis guy are providing decent width for Everton to play wide and take the match to citeh. Donovan has drawn a couple of opening matches vs. Arsenal and citeh where he wasn't kicked and got plenty of time and space on the ball. It will be interesting to see how he fares against clubs that press, hassle, kick, and play more of a traditional English game.

Everton really could have won by four or five. It was also great to see him clapped off at goodison. But I don't know about questioning LD's ability to withstand the physicality, they try to beat the hell out of him in MLS and in CONCACAF too but with a player with that kind of speed and agility, it's a big risk to try to time so many tackles. His play is reminiscent of a Robben or Ljungberg IMO (of course both of those players were prone to injury).

..and Carragher is absolutely horrible. He had one great game this year against United, but has been a massive liability in almost every other match. Exactly one half of L'pool's conceded goals have come off of set pieces. I don't think there was a person watching the match that believed L'pool wouldn't concede the equalizer - I was only surprised that Stoke couldn't bury the winner in stoppage. It was like the end of the Pens/Edmtn game the other night - everyone knew the goal was coming.

Donovan definitely didn't look out of place. He did well taking the corners and tracked back well defensively. He seems to fit in well with the high-pressure, up-tempo style Everton is trying to employ.

That being said, I thought he was a bit tentative with the ball at his feet at times, and he was never close to winning a ball in the air (which is more of a problem playing in front of Neville, who never seems to play anything to feet).

I didn't mean to imply Donovan is soft. I know the crap MLS & CONCACAF players kick the h#!! out of him. My point was more about Arsenal & citeh. They give opponents time and space on the ball plus their opponents have options in the final 3rd because Arsenal & citeh don't have 10 men behind the ball. They are probably the 2 most open teams in the EPL.

When Donovan plays some of the other teams (I haven't looked at his 3 month loan schedule) like Blackburn, Bolton, Stoke, Birmingham, etc they will press/hassle/kick him and they will actually be good defenders/football players relative to the losers Donovan plays in MLS & CONCACAF. Those type of EPL teams defend tooth and nail. They challenge every ball (even 35/65) with zeal. They tackle with purpose. They close down time & space. They put most of their men behind the ball to take away passing options. Plus they have decent football skill relative to MLS.

Donovan also has benefited from playing with a fit Saha. Saha still has sublime skills. He wouldn't be at Everton if he could have stayed healthy at United.

Rafa set out to draw IMO. I can see putting 3 central defenders (Carra at RB) across the back since Stoke will pump balls into the box all game long, but then he put 2 fullbacks at wing along side 2 defensive central mids with a defensive wing (Kuyt) as one of his strikers. Ngog was essentially the only attacking player IMO. I thought Stoke would eventually win. I guess Fuller isn't fit to play 90 because their attack was much more lively after his introduction. They missed Delap's long throws. It seems like their attack is designed to get a ton of throw ins in the final 3rd, but the guy that took them after Delap departed wasn't very proficient, at least by Delap standards. Sorensen ( PFIM) was very timid on the Pool goal. It was a very entertaining match.

If anything I think Saha has been incredibly selfish the last two games. He could have sent in LD and Cahill last game, could have easily sent in Bilyblahblahblah today. I'm certainly not denying his ability, just that he seems to get caught up in it a bit at times.

Donovan doesn't look out of place, but really hasn't be a spark offensively. I expect more of him once he gets acclimated. He seems content playing the right side and helping the team keep its shape (which you can't argue with results). Again, I don't really think he's suited to play wide right, his best position is playing off of a striker (like Ching) or playing the left side, where he naturally plays towards the middle. He's not a typical wide player, he can't really show off his direct running there.

It's interesting that the Galaxy picked up Clint Mathis. He can play a few different spots, but he plays in many of the areas that Donovan does.

That's pretty bad, although it didn't seem like Frankfurt was really arguing. Then again, they were down 4-0 before the goal, so they probably didn't care.

Tough news on Dempsey.

That was a horrible call. The ball obviously wasn't close to the goal line. FIFA has to implement new goal line assistance for the refs. Aren't they using 2 extra officials on the goal lines at the UEFA losers Cup? Video review and/or extra goal line officials definitely should be implemented for the WC, major Cup competitions, and major domestic leagues.

Ronaldinho seems to be rounding into form (literally & figuratively) in this WC year. His recent patch of goals poses some questions United didn't think they would have to answer when the draw was announced last month.

Big game for Liverpool today...if they can make a statement against a team that's already beaten them this year and is currently occupying the highest spot on the table they can realistically expect to reach it will go a long way towards getting their season back on track. Not sure what their injury situation is for today though.

More like it's a big day for Benitez. Or is his ticket out already punched?

Ownership swears he isn't going anywhere...of course that's always a canned remark when someones job is on the line. IMO it would be unwise to ship him out for one bad season, the guys turned everything he touched to gold in the past.

Gallas should have received a red card and instead Arsenal gets a goal. It should be interesting to hear Wenger claim he didn't see it.

Benitez won't be sacked because he is owed 4.5 more year of wages. If he is sacked, I'd guess Pool will wait to announce his successor and give him an easy run of games like citeh did with Mancini.

I'd call the Sullivan takeover at West Ham the least of evils. It sounds like he's obliged to purchase the remaining 50% conditionally assuming West Ham meets certain financial targets. It seems like the bank cut a very good deal because Sullivan assumed all of the debts but only gained a 50% share of the club. The bank got all the liability off their books and has a bit of upside if Sullivan turns things around.

He seems like a genuine supporter so maybe that is why he made a move that seems stupid financially. I also think his plan about moving into the Olympic stadium with massive capacity and competing for Euro Cup football is quite ambitious. It will anger many supporters and may not be realistic.

His time at Birmingham seemed pretty shady IMO. Brady always seemed to be in some kind of trouble and the takeover by Yeung seemed irregular.

I think it is unfortunate for West Ham's fans, but the club is really screwed IMO. The Icelandic owners blatantly cheated with Tevez' registration. They signed a bunch of over the hill faded stars to massive wages the following season then illegally sacked Curbishly. The Icelanders really got away from West Ham's heritage which was developing great young talent with one of the best football academies in England. I think that is why West Ham fans and English football fans in general would be happy to see a porno king take over. The Icelanders and foreign owners in general have done very bad things for English football. Even benefactors like Abramovich and the guy from Abu Dubai are living on borrowed time. Sooner or later they will grow tired of subsidizing losses and when they leave their clubs will be screwed.

I don't think there is any way West Ham can service their debts. The debts are massive for a club with a limited turnover. They would be better served IMO by going into administration (the English term for bankruptcy) so they can reduce their debts and restructure them on a more manageable basis. There would be some short term pain because they would be docked points (10 or 15 I believe) which would most certainly lead to relegation this season, but they could come back quickly assuming they managed things right and then really have a sound platform to build on for the long term.

Sullivan did hire good Managers at Birmingham IMO. Bruce was good and McLeish is excellent. I don't think Zola is ready for the EPL. West Ham play far too open and they are too soft for a club of their stature. It is nice to talk about playing beautiful football, but I don't think it is very pragmatic for West Ham right now. I'd imagine Sullivan will find somebody that reworks the squad to be more physical and better defensively.

West Ham allegedly chasing Ruud:

http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/sport/ ... 997733.ece

It is absurd. One day Sullivan and Gold are preaching financial responsibility and the next they are lavishing a £100,000 per week deal on a guy that has only played a handful of games this season after coming off his 2nd major knee surgery.

He's been playing football at the highest levels with United and Madrid. He doesn't seem like the kind of player made for a relegation battle. No offense to Zola, but SAF couldn't control Ruud at United. How could Zola ever expect to control Ruud at West Ham?

This Ruud thing is one of the worst ideas for West Ham I've seen in a while. I mean, why do this? There's very little upside here imo. Even if he is healthy, the dude's career will be over in a year or two. Again, they're not building anything at West Ham, just slapping bandaids on the gunshot wound.

How about the upside of staying in the EPL? West Ham is only narrowly above the drop zone, and RVN still has game when he's healthy. 100k/wk pales in comparison to what they will lose by being relegated.
