Re: NBA
They're not going to get rid of him without some sort of clause in the agreement of being an owner. I'm pretty sure being arrested and charged with rape would be something on that agreement... saying something racist? Doubtful.

They will get rid of him one way or another if the pressure to do so reaches a certain point regardless of the legality of the recording. As Columbia said, the legality of the recording is irrelevant.

Not to Ms Stiviano it isn't. That's the context I'm talking about.Factorial wrote:As Columbia said, the legality of the recording is irrelevant.

This is so bizarre. Shes already being sued by Sterling's wife because she didn't sign off on all her Bentleys and Ferraris. You have to imagine Billionaire Don will sue her too. Nevermind that he seems to be the sole source of her allowance.Factorial wrote:Is this the mistress? I have no sympathy for mistresses male or female esp when they are involved only for the money.pittsoccer33 wrote:This is so bizarre. She fell hopelessly in love with him, grew to care for him, and then became tremendously concerned when he wasn't the man she thought he was. She recorded him, hoping he would repent his hateful views before he passed away. You are a very jaded person, Factorial.Factorial wrote:I have no sympathy for mistresses male or female esp when they are involved only for the money.

Re: NBA
I feel like it would be difficult for a bunch of hockey fans to sympathize with the black community (because statistically, hockey players and fans are pretty predominately white) but c'mon, this goes well beyond just "being offended". Trust me, I think it's ridiculous when people are offended whenever someone says something marginally offensive.Shyster wrote:To be clear, I am absolutely appalled by this matter. Not because an old geezer said something offensive, but rather the howling horde of manufactured public indignation. Apparently, saying something that might hurt another person's feelings is not only a crime worthy of losing your job (see the former CEO of Mozilla), but in the mere weeks since that brouhaha the crime has increased to the point where this man must be forcibly sundered from his own personal property. Articles all of the web (and posters here on LGP) are demanding that he lose his franchise. Why don't we just go back to the good 'ol days and build a pyre so we can just burn the heretic?
But this goes well beyond just being offended. I think it goes without saying that blacks have gone through some terrible crap in this country and Sterling's comments are very racist and pretty much "blacks are not on the same level as whites" (I think at one point he refers to blacks as "the enemy"...could be wrong though).
Now obviously I can't say for certain because I'm whiter then a ghost that feel in a bucket of bleach, but I would feel like as a black person having to deal with a lifetime of people saying that I'm not on the same level of humanity or whatever as them gets pretty damn hurtful and whatnot. I think Sterling should definitely lose his ownership of the team.

I can't say for anything that's beyond my lifespan (~23 years) or any famous examples, but for me personally (and Bill Simmons) this is the greatest collapse in NBA history.shafnutz05 wrote:Getting back to the actual NBA, wow, how bad is this Pacers collapse?
And, as a Heat fan, I am bathing in the tears of Pacers fans. I almost had legitimate doubt that the Heat wouldn't be able to get past Indiana, but if the Hawks beat them then holy crap, the East is wide open for the Heat.
Also, the Bulls and Nets either losing or being tied with Washington and Toronto is pretty awesome.
The most surprising series definitely is the Mavs/Spurs. I had that series going 6, just because I didn't trust the Spurs at their age and obviously I know what Dirk can do (see: 2011 finals). But the Mavs have shown that they are pretty much even with the Spurs at this point and I'll be surprised if it doesn't go 7.
inb4 no one responds because NHL fans hate the NBA and NBA fans hate the NHL. I like both though =(

The sentimental reaction is the ethically correct one, if not the legally correct one. But the NBA's legal remedies certainly seem to encompass potential termination:shafnutz05 wrote:Shyster wrote:To be clear, I am absolutely appalled by this matter. I am not quite as libertarian as you are (no ****,), but this is pretty well said. I'm fine with whatever the NBA wants to do in conjunction with their existing fine/suspension structure, but it's been crazy hearing people saying he should be stripped of what is basically half a billion dollars of his own wealth for saying that. He's always been a piece of garbage, and I know it's an emotional reaction, but that pervasive sentiment is honestly what gives a lot of people pause.

Re: NBA
If this were just a case of being tossed aside for something younger and fresher, I would pretty much agree; live by, die by, as it were. But this is pretty different - this is a black woman being told she should not be publicly consorting with black people, and that it would be super swell if she didn't bring any black people to 'his' NBA games. That's not garden variety scorned lover stuff. And in the grand scheme of things, if she's not being deceptive or fraudulent in her relationship with Sterling then that's a two-to-tango situation, and I don't have any problem with that. And judging by the subtext of the recording - where Sterling says she can sleep with black people, just don't be seen in public with them - I'd say the framework of their 'relationship' was pretty well understood by both sides.Factorial wrote:I have no sympathy for mistresses male or female esp when they are involved only for the money.

Reports are that there are hundreds of hours of conversations made with his consent. She is on the payroll employed as an Archivist to record his thoughts and accounts of life. Also, she is not the first that his wife has filed suit against to have property returned.

I think I agree with Cuban. Let the sponsors and fans force the sale. The NBA should not do it. It is indeed a slippery slope.shafnutz05 wrote:

Assuming he says "up yours, just to stick it to everyone I will run this team with my own fortune, pay league mininmum salaries, and wont care who shows up to watch" that will have financial implications for the rest of the league. At what point can they demand action?PensFanInDC wrote:I think I agree with Cuban. Let the sponsors and fans force the sale. The NBA should not do it. It is indeed a slippery slope.shafnutz05 wrote:
