I'm gonna stick with whatever you feel is best for your child. Final answer.

Taking an 8-month old to the zoo... Good idea or waste of time?

Waste of time. Unless you just want a day outside and like going to zoos.

Good idea IMO. Let him/her experience as much as he/she can.

Hold onto them near the exhibits. Sounds obvious, but...

Agreed. As far as letting them experience everything, it's not like she's going to remember going to the zoo. That being said, we love taking our daughter on walks in the woods (have the sweet backpack), to local festivals, etc, because there's no doubt that stimulation is good. If you are going to the zoo because YOU want to go, that's one thing, but don't do it for her. There are a lot of other cheaper options (or free) that he/she will enjoy just as much.slappybrown wrote:Waste of time. Unless you just want a day outside and like going to zoos.
We know a couple that just traveled to Disney for a week with their 3 month old and 2 year old. Like seriously, wtf?

Just took my 6 month old. He loved it. It was also a nice day to just get out. The huge cheeses and excited yells with every animal were pretty awesome. But then the Mrs told me to chill out and pay attention to our child.meow wrote:Taking an 8-month old to the zoo... Good idea or waste of time?

Zoos cost money?
Also what is the difference between experiencing something and being stimulated by it as far as an infant goes?

I'm focusing more on the financial aspect. I mean if you want to go to the zoo, more power to you. And yes, I've never been to a zoo that didn't have an admission.PensFanInDC wrote:Zoos cost money?

And I would say a zoo is a much better option than a sporting event or something.

I'd wait until the kid is 2 or so to go to the zoo, but that's just me.

I keep forgetting that the SD zoo costs money. My mother in law had season passes so we never paid. The Smithsonian Zoo, which is the only other zoo I've been to, is free.
A zoo trip can be cheap if you pack your own food and drink (if allowed). When we go to the DC zoo it only costs us the metro fare. It could be free (except for gas) if we drove down.

you can also kill and eat the animals there, but please be aware, it is frowned upon.

Not to sound like moneybags meow, but money isn't really the problem. I just don't want to take him and he not see the animals/be entertained. Pavel kind of answered the question by saying his 6 month old enjoyed their trip.

We've taken our son multiple times. The first is when he was 7 months. He also loved it. Every kid is different though.

If he gets half as excited as when the dogs come up to him, it will be worth it.PensFanInDC wrote:We've taken our son multiple times. The first is when he was 7 months. He also loved it. Every kid is different though.

I'm still stuck on the huge cheeses part... it sounds interesting, but then again I like cheese.

Why cheese, why not "everyone say Beeees"…
I guess to kids and most people, cheese is far less scary than bees.

Re: LGP Parenting Thread
Has been quite a week in the shad household. Not only is my soon to be 1 year old daughter suddenly walking EVERYWHERE (she was taking two, maybe three steps as of last week), but when I went out to get her out of my wife's car yesterday afternoon, she looked up, gave a big toothy grin, and said "Dada". Pretty sure my heart melted right there.
It's crazy how once she starts trying to do something she picks it up at an insane rate.

We ended up taking meow jr. to the zoo. He absolutely loved it. He was very curious and attentive to all the animals.

They are incredible. My youngest started to walk a bit past 1. Much like your story, it was one or two steps before being on his butt, and the next weekend he was walking all over the house.shafnutz05 wrote:Has been quite a week in the shad household. Congrats on maintaining sanity through the first year. A week or two after her party, drop her at her grandparents and go celebrate said sanity with your wife.
