LGP Parenting Thread

Post by PensFanInDC »

As the median age of the LGP poster goes up so does the amount of parents we have on the board. We have some experienced parents here and some brand new parents (myself included). I've noticed a lot of parenting issues are discussed in a few threads so I thought we could maybe use a centralized place for it. Use this thread to post general parenting stuff like "life hacks" (I hate that term), questions for other parents, funny stories (my son calls his underpants, "thunder pants"), and other general parenting stuff.

Has anyone used the "potty training boot camp" method? You basically keep your kid naked around the house for a weekend and follow them everywhere with a potty asking them every 5 minutes if they need to go. I've heard it works but I'm not sure I have the energy to do that.

At first, I assumed I'd gain nothing from this thread. But, upon further review, I believe it's going to devolve into a clever advertisement for the DINK life.

potty training starts soon. i'm horrified by the prospect.

our doctor's suggestion is to put the kid in regular cotton underwear - and only that. so when they go, the experience feels so unpleasant for them that they'll learn to ask to use the toilet pretty quickly.

You couldn't even wait for the first parent reply before chiming in, couldn't you? ;)

We lucked out with my oldest with potty training. We sat her on the toilet at 21 months, she pooped, and from that day forward, she has gone on the potty. Even night time bathroom, we would put an overnight diaper on once she got out of diapers during the day time (around 2 year birthday), and she never had an accident. So we took those off around 2 1/2, and have been diaper free on her ever since.

I know that is extremely early and extremely lucky. And we didnt' do anything special, she just caught on quick.

I think we are going to have issues with my second kid though. She seems to have no interest.

Best thing I ever did was agreeing to coach my little girl's soccer team after first saying to the coaching director: "I never played and don't know anything about soccer."

I have had such a good time. Next season we move up to soccer with a goalie. I am a little :scared:

The kids listen and are just incredibly sweet.

People that go out of their way to champion this point of view make me believe that they wouldn't mind kids but for one reason or another can't or won't have them.

That's not to say that is the case for either one of you. But it's just weird to me that people take every opportunity to mention this fact instead of just glossing over this subject entirely.

Ha, or they don't.

My daughter turns three this month. In January/February of this year, she was really doing well with potty training. Went several weeks without any pee accidents, pooping was always a little tougher. Then in the last month or so she has just lost interest in caring. Mainly poop accidents (awesome), but a few pee as well. With the pooping, she just seems to love to poop on he knees in the corner. She'll be about to do it, and we'll grab her and throw her on the toilet, and she won't go. We'll go it again 10 minutes later, won't go. Then she slips away into the playroom kneels in the corner and poops.

She's been better the past couple weeks, so hopefully this is done soon.

good god. at least i have hardwood floors, i guess.

my daughter asks to be put on the toilet all the time, has been since she was 18 months or so (she's 21 months now). but it's evolved into her just wanting to name all the sesame street characters that she's sitting on. the next kid gets a plain white kid's toilet seat.

For what it's worth, had anyone other than PFiDC started this thread I wouldn't have posted anything. I think the DINK Life forced culture is dumb, makes as much sense as organized Atheists.

This, almost to a T.

My oldest (now 4) started at 2, by 2 and a half she never saw a diaper again. Under half a dozen "accidents" since then as well. Nothing special, she just rocked it all on her own.

My middle child is now 2 and a half, and only decides to use the bathroom when she's been told to get in her bed (Note that her older sister probably taught her this trick. We once had a conversation like this:
Me: Pick up your toys.
A: (picks up two legos and gets distracted)
Me: Come on, pick up your toys. I know you can, your teacher at school makes you do it all the time.
A: No I don't.
Me: What do you mean you don't?
A: I just tell her I have to go the bathroom and when I get back everybody else has picked them up.)

Side note, the 2 year old was all but broken from a pacifier, until my wife went back to work a few months ago and now it's become her security blanket. Not sure what else I'm going to try, probably stop short of soaking it in hot sauce.

I start the DI2K lifestyle in November. Really looking forward that that massive 10% daycare discount on the second child.

i start DI2K in september. we use a babysitter, not a day care...so we can't declare it on our taxes AND there may not be any discount for baby #2 (she hasn't mentioned any price adjustment yet).

First full Daddy/son day with the 2.5 month old. So far it's a success

Kid slept till 9:30 - Awesome
Kid ate with minor spit up - Awesome
Kid smiled at Daddy and played - Awesome
Kid got upset but Dad knew what was wrong (he was hungry) - Awesome
Kid fought the sleep and the sleep won - Awesome

my daughter is almost 2. here is a full list of places she's been with just me:

-a million trips to the baby sitter
-1 trip to the doctor
-1 trip to the school where my wife works

that's it.

is that unusual, or do you guys go out alone with your infants/toddlers all the time?

Mine is only 4 months old, but we go out alone every week for an average of 2 hours per trip.

DI3K, $10 off the second and third kid each week.
Our daycare probably has at least half of its kids come from one family and their friends. I always said we needed to band together and get a better rate or tell them we're starting our own.

Keep it up Pavel.

I took all three to the grocery store, pushing two carts, when the littlest was 3 months. If I had a dime for how many old ladies came up asking if I needed any help I wouldn't have had to pay for the groceries. They made it sound like I was superman or something.

Most of the time we all go as a family, but maybe once every two weeks I'll take the girls out to run errands and leave CBear4 at home to get his mommy and me time.

I'm sure it depends on the parenting style or the couple's schedule. I've been out countless times alone with my son.
