That Kahne stab was great. I was going to reply "Even you forgot there were four Hendrick cars" before realizing that you were just setting yourself up.

I agree with your assessment of the incident. Gordon didn't open up a hole because he obviously was swinging wide with the intention of coming down against the 48. He wouldn't have stayed that high. What really cuts in Kes's favor is he had a monstrous run before he pulled out from behind the 48. Having him lift there, with the race on the line, would have been a lot ask given his points situation.

Harvick is such a *****, but that was hilarious. "You wrecked him. Go talk to him." Brawl. Expect some pit guys to be fined. What in the hell was that guy from the 5 team doing? He came out of nowhere and threw haymakers.

It's easy to forget that most of these pit guys are "good ol' boys" in many senses of the word. I'm sure they enjoy a good scrap.

Denny and Joey clinch a spot in the finale with

11th and no laps led.
12th and a lap led.
13th and most laps led.

Reasoning:

Assume Harvick, Kes, Edwards, or Kenseth win. That means there are three spots for points transfers. Hamlin is 12 points ahead of Gordon, who is currently in fourth. If Gordon comes in second (remember we assume a bottom-four driver won) and leads the most laps, he'll receive only 11 more points than Denny does (2 place is 9 spots higher than 11th, 1 point for lap, 1 point for most laps). Gordon will have the tiebreaker, which is best finish in the Eliminator Round.

That means Newman can clinch with a 9th and no laps, 10th and a lap, 11th with most laps.

Gordon, Kenseth, Edwards, Keselowski, and Harvick control their own destiny only if they win, but they all stand a decent chance of point their way in: Kenseth is 1 point out, Harvick, who is in last place, is only 6 points out of the transfer spot.

Prediction: Phoenix will be effin crazy.

Gargantuan supporter of this new system. I cannot get enough NASCAR.

I still hate this system. I'm sure Logano hates it too right now. He's leading in the 2013 chase rules by 35 points over Harvick and 49 over Keselowski with 2 to go. He could top 10 himself to finish it off. Instead it's up in the air. No Chase, and Gordon is leading Logano by 26 points.

(I think this season, and the Chase in particular, cheapens the Summer races as their import, instead of having every race worth the same thing. I don't like Gordon much, but he's by far and away had the speed and the most consistent season. Would be a shame if Keselowski's shenanigans ends up costing Gordon the title.

Hamlin's take on the Texas brawl (as told Marty Smith of ESPN):
(excerpts)
Q. Would you have made that move?

DENNY HAMLIN: I don't know. I think about that a lot and whether I would or would not. He was on fresher tires. So saying that that was his only opportunity to get the win may not necessarily be a true statement. He still had two laps to get around.
And if you push the 48 there past the 24, it was a battle between him and the 48. I don't know. You know, it's tough for me to say. And his points position, his actual position, I didn't have the tires he had. So everyone has a different way of doing things.
But I think a common feel amongst drivers is that what they call that, people are calling that a hole that that was a very small hole. And the car is call it six and a half, seven foot wide, that hole was six foot. It was not enough that a car was going to fit without being in contact. Somebody was going to have to pay the price. It was Jeff Gordon. And it made him have a bad day.
And
If he did it to me I would have had the same reaction as Jeff. No question. I think that's what escalated it the most.

Wow. Newman puts Montoya into the wall in turn 4 to beat Gordon by one point to proceed to homestead. Feel awful for Jeff

Kind of illustrates the absurdity of this year's system.

(Just like how tiebreakers were not normal season result tiebreakers, but only tiebreakers within that round. So although 24 & 4 each then had 4 season wins, the win trumped the two 2nd place finishes by Gordon in the round. But on the season, they would have been tied with 4 wins, with Gordon getting tiebreakers on # of 2nd place finishes.

(FWIW, under last year's Chase system, Logano is the point leader right now by a few over Gordon, while 1-2 is reversed if no Chase)

Prediction:
Someone other than the top four will win at Homestead. My money is on the 24.

Bob Pockrass wrote a good article. Not unlike other sports, NASCAR has sacrificed the ability to compare past champions and diluted the championship's prestige in exchange for excitement, ratings, and money. Get over it. The NFL is adding WC teams. MLB added one, and this year's WS champion won it; they wouldn't have made the playoffs under the old system.

I believe people are not annoyed that the best driver didn't win -- we all know Harvick, Logano, Kes, and Gordon were this season's best -- but rather than they're frustrated that we cannot compare Johnson's 7th Championship to Earnhardt or Petty because they were won under different circumstance. Maybe.

But let's enjoy the now, and let's hope the 11 wins this weekend.

One of the fundamental pillars of motorsport as competition is consistency. Be it attrition in F1 (not so much anymore), surviving the 24HR of LeMans, or being consistently the highest average finisher in NASCAR. The Chase and the crap it's spawned has mostly eliminated that to the point that it really isn't motorsport in the proper terms anymore, it's an exhibition like the International Race of Champions.

No, I'm totally hoping one of the 4 doesn't win and Newman finishes second to take the crown :)

4 to go with Hamlin - Harvick - Newman all running in the top 3.

Would laugh if all three wrecked on the final lap and Logano came from 24th to win the Chase.
