Kids learn to speak from the people they are around. If their parents don't speak properly, they won't either. That then translates to the written word. It is a long, hard process to undo.murphydump55 wrote:I just don't understand how these very common errors continue to happen. What exactly do they teach in school? Are they not correcting these errors? If a kid starts saying "I seen" in the third grade, wouldn't it be corrected by the time they graduate highschool? If you have to write papers or reports, how is it that people still don't know the difference between your and you're? Or there, their, and they're?meow wrote:Not sure how I missed those two.mikey287 wrote:grammer*; weather*
This isn't a knock on anyone on here, but more a knock on the school system. This new notion of pushing kids through and not failing them is accomplishing nothing. Why even go to school if you can't fail and don't have to learn proper grammar? Isn't the whole point of attending school to learn? These students that never learned the proper usage of words are probably teachers now too. Scary.
/end rant.
As for Murray, I agree with Mikey in that he's played less than 50 games at the AHL level and needs more time. He's not going to develop sitting on the bench behind Fleury who already plays a ton of games. As great as Murray has been this year, we need to see what he can do next year. Obviously if this type of play continues, he's going to have to get a look sometime, but it remains to be seen if this play will carry over to next season.
He's a hometown boy for me, my friend coaches him in the summer, and I still don't want to rush him into anything. Let's see what we have in a couple years.

Since he's still under contract, I'd go with "is."

"signed" is past tense. Keep the tense the same. He was signed. Though he is currently under contact, the contract was signed already. That would be how would handle it...not sure which is technically correct, given the odd ball nature of the condition.

Wouldn't is be proper if you were saying "Ehrhoff is signed through the end of the year"?

Yeah, since you're referencing the present. "I'm glad Ehrhoff was signed last summer," vs. "I'm glad Ehrhoff is signed only through this season."MRandall25 wrote:Wouldn't is be proper if you were saying "Ehrhoff is signed through the end of the year"?

Honestly, the only ones that really bug me are "irregardless," and "would of / should of." The latter even more than the former, probably, since I'm starting to see it a lot more.Lt. Dish wrote:My list of grammar, punctuation, usage, and phrasing gripes is long. I'm Dishwater at parties.

Re: Grammarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
Proper grammar is actually pretty important to me. English is my second language, though I've been here for many many years now. Still, it bothers me when I read obvious mistakes, as in people not being taught well. I'm not talking about typos, because we all make those, but something like this here:
The dwarf is probably better, but it takes longer before you can use. I like the look of the road rather than elf dwarf's appearance as well. It begins with a descent of a random point in the chest or Barrell. I first met in m Fornost. And two more in Barrow.
That is from a thread on a certain game I was playing. I think I want to hit that person.
On another note, one thing that bothers me to no end is "would of" / "could of". I thought they would teach that in grade school.

Re: Grammarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
What's quite nice is that my mother is a college level English teacher. This has made me a stickler for proper writing. What's depressing is that I am in a masters program administered by an Austrian university. Somehow, my papers always are deducted for, "Improper Grammar". This is after they have been proofread by my mother. (Yes, I know this is sad, but after having my skills questioned by non-native speakers, I was concerned I had lost said skills.). Unfortunately, I received worse marks for grammar after her proofing the papers. Needless to say, I'm not happy with the evaluation of my writing by these jags.

One that see often on a mountain biking forum that I frequent and also in used car ads is breaks instead of brakes. Makes me nuts.
A couple days ago someone posted a picture of 2 mountain bikes at the top of a mountain with the caption "About to begin the decent!" <descent>
I quoted it with this reply...

Re: Grammarrrrrrrrrrrrrrr!
I'm sure I'm going to annoy my kids as they grow up - but when they enter the workplace, they will know the difference between "would of" and "would have" (as discussed above). They will also know the difference between your and you're, cause and because, their, there and they're, to and too, and lose and loose. Seriously, why can't anyone spell LOSE haha.
It's also curious to me why grammar is often so poor in the workplace. I would of
thought so-called professionals would understand that emails in particular, often end up being forwarded to so many people.

My favorite is then/than. When someone uses then instead of than, it's funny to read what they said as if they actually wanted to use then.

Both are fine because "signed" has two different meanings: (1) The continual state of being secured on one team, which refers to the presence, and (2) the act of signing one's name on a contract that secures that player, which occurs once and is in the past.no name wrote:I am so glad Ehrhoff is\was only signed for one season.

Can someone explain the difference between their and there? I know They're means they are. The other two I am not sure the proper place to use them.
Also if you are referring to a number is there a rule to using the number form of say 3, or spelling the number out?
I lost 3\three pounds this week.

I generally write the number out if it is ten and under. Above that, I’ll use the actually number.no name wrote:Can someone explain the difference between their and there? I know They're means they are. The other two I am not sure the proper place to use them.
