I do not think that word means what you think it means.

Fact is Sterling is a ****, sure. But people knew he was a **** racist 10 years ago, why now?
Certainly not on the Defending Donald Sterling bandwagon here, but in the past all of the stories about him were allegations. Granted, in at least one case those allegations were being made by the U.S. government. But his prior indiscretions were always other people accusing him of this repugnant behavior. This instance was his own voice on a recording espousing this moronic, hateful nonsense. Also, his prior incidents largely kept the NBA out of the picture, while this time he is invoking his status as team owner as a framework for his racism. There's been a lot of smoke around him in the past; this time he was caught warming his hands around the fire.
I'll say this; without his track record, I don't think he would have gotten the banhammer the way he did yesterday. If this was the first time there had been any hint of this crap around him, he probably would have skated with a fine and a short suspension. But because of the past incidents, they cam down like a ton of bricks on him.

I don't think so, but I don't watch the NBA. It would be unprecedented, no? I just don't see players caring enough to give up game checks (is that a thing in basketball?) and a chance to play playoff basketball, as I assume they have incentive based contracts and playoff games are a premium.
I think thinking I missed part of the story after reading what he actually said. Although extremely stupid, I can't believe he got banned from the NBA for it.
I don't really understand the players wanting to boycott thing. I think Sterling should be forced to sell, but what the Hell is boycotting going to do? Sterling has more more money than any person would know what to do with, boycotting would literally do nothing but hurt the fans.
What seemed shocking to me is that Sterling didn't seem at least apologetic about what he said. From what Silver said, it didn't sound like he was remorseful at all. Maybe there wasn't much for him to gain but I wonder if he would've been banned for life and forced out if he would've admitted it was him and that he is terribly wrong.

So I have yet to see exactly what he said... was it just "I don't want you posing for pictures with black guys" or "I don't want you going to games with black guys". Am I missing something here? Did he say something other than that to warrant a lifetime ban from the NBA?
If he were to pay the fine imposed, (and why would he if he is being banned from the league) is tax deductible. He wins.
The league forces him to sell his franchise that he bought for 20 Million -- now valued at a Billion. He wins.
Thought is that he will file legal actions against the NBA to stop them from taking away his ability to earn a living. A prolonged legal battle where other franchise owners could be called upon to swear under oath there are no other 'racist, bigoted, homophobic, etc' owners in the league that also warrant a forced sale of their team? Does the NBA really want the public to see what goes on behind the scene? He wins?
His views are well documented, and he was about to receive an award from the same group that now wants him to be stripped of his business.
He reportedly donates money to both political parties.

That's enough to ban him, I agree. He did say some other stuff that was pretty bad. Usually you see someone apologize in situations like this but he hasn't even done that. I guess it probably wouldn't have helped him but come on, suck it up.

If nothing else, this is a marketing nightmare for the NBA and a huge insult to it's players. I have no doubt that if this went on without the NBA stepping in, the pressure from a majority of the players themselves and the black community would have been extremely high on all the players to boycott the playoffs.

i enjoyed the artest melee a great deal. if it's a scar, it's only because the league neutered itself after it happened. you're no longer allowed to be emotional in the NBA.
though in the end, i don't think either really matter, as far as the popularity of the league or its bottom line are concerned.

Not sure about NBA, but I thought NHL players were not paid after the regular season ended regardless of how far they go in the playoffs. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.
