I'd go to Fremont street in Old Vegas during the night to catch the light show. You can grab a limo/van or something in and out to avoid the scary parts.

Not sure why you wouldn't want to see a Cirque show. Love was outstanding.

The bar I linked into my post is on Fremont. So that might be a plan. Bar/lightshow/cab.

I am just not a fan of Cirque.

So we are going to Nashville in 2 weekends. Got enough friends that want to go to make the cost reasonable. Staying at the Hyatt Place in downtown Nashville. What to do other than drink beer and listen to country music?

I have an easier time believing we can put a man on the moon than I can believe what I see at a Cirque show. Love was lighter on the acrobatics, but the 1st show I saw (can't remember the name) was jaw dropping.

I actually don't care for Fremont street, but it's probably something you should see at least once on a trip to Vegas. I think it was Binion's coffee shop (also on Fremont st.) that was supposed to be really good too. It's not a coffee shop like you might be thinking. http://www.binions.com/dining/coffee_shop.php

Good experiences? Bad experiences? Is the private room rather than private home/apartment option a weird thing? It seems like it's much cheaper than a hotel as well.

We've used airbnb in NYC a couple of times but only used ones that were the entire apartment. No issues at all.

My favorite place I have been is Japan. Been there 3 times and I never tire. Absolute incredible natural beauty, awesome people, incredible food, chaos and order at the same time, just fantastic. Another incredible trip is Germany for Christmas markets. You won't ever want to be in the US for Christmas time again. I could go into a ton of others. Travel is not dangerous if you are intelligent and take reasonable precautions like you would in any place. Statistically, most places in the US have higher crime rates, especially violent crime, than many major international destinations.

I'm in NYC right now. Went to see Janis Joplin last night after eating at Becco. Stayed at the Millennium Hotel on 45th near Times Square. Booked through Expedia for about $220 for the night. There is Hyatt done the street for a little cheaper but the Expedia website said they are doing renovations and I didn't want to chance being woken up to the sound of construction.

As for the crowds, I wouldn't say they were very crowded but it is still busy.

I think this summer I will try to go across the USA. I am feeling 2 summers from now going to Europe or Australia.

Excellent choice. I've always believed in seeing the USA first. Put your money into the pockets of your American brethren. Along those lines my very favorite part of the country starts in the Rocky Mountains and goes all the way to the Pacific Ocean states. The very best and most beautiful National Parks are in the American West. Grand Teton Nat'l Park (most spectacular mountain range in the USA), Yellowstone NP, Glacier NP, Crater Lake NP (bluest water of any lake you will ever see), Yosemite NP (although I've never been there), Mt Rainier NP, Redwood NP, Grand Canyon NP, Rocky Mountain NP, and one I really like, Monument Valley Navajo Tribal Park. But you probably can't cover all of those in one summer, it's more like a lifetime journey. And that is just the start. There are lots of other places out west I haven't mentioned. And I know I said see America first, but you also would want to travel into Western Canada and take in the Canadian Rockies, including Banff NP, Jasper NP, Yoho NP, Revelstoke NP, Waterton Lake National Peace Park (those are in Alberta & British Columbia). You can search any one of these places on the web and get an idea of what I am referring to.

And of course, there is Alaska via a cruise or cruise tour (cruise + land tour...my choice for a 1st trip to AK). But that cost lots so maybe unless you have won the lottery, or make a bundle in your job, it takes the will to save up for that trip. That being said I've spent a lot of money in my lifetime (I'm 68 now) going on vacations, but I have never regretted one penny I ever spent on travelling. If you have the "want" to travel you will never regret it either.

I love priceline. Just got our hotel room for our yearly Pittsburgh trip for $75 a night at the Marriot downtown (well below 50% of their normal price). I look forward to this trip every year, and we usually are at the Westin as that's usually the cheapest option, but apparently the Marriot had better rates for our weekend this year. Can't really say I'm disappointed.

Alright everyone.. my wife and I are planning to go to Boston and Maine this summer. We'll be in Boston for about 2-3 days, up to Maine (Acadia area) for 2-3 days and back to Boston for a day.

What are the best places to visit in Boston and Maine? My interests are history, scenery, and food. I love cheeseburgers and seafood.

Acadia is one of the most beautiful places I've ever been. If you're a Stephen King fan, I can tell you where to find his house in Bangor.

Western Maine features some really stunning lakes and mountains.

The Hyatt Downtown is about three blocks from Broadway. You aren't to far from the "action".

There are some decent liquor / package stores between Broadway and Church up by 2nd and 3rd avenues.

I personally loved Bourbon Street Blues & Boogie Bar, but it's Blues and not country. The area around there is "off Broadway" but a 'local' secret.

Be careful parking in the area (on street), they're serious about ticketing

If someone does stay at a Hyatt, I have a $100 certificate for a 2 night stay that I got through discover that I thought I was going to use for a wedding last year that ended up being on the same weekend as another wedding that I was in. Getting it through discover gives you a ridiculous discount so if someone can use it, i'd give it to them for like 50 cents on the dollar.
