Still don't understand the hate for Thomas. I can certainly see how my son uses the lessons from that show to help other people.
the trains on thomas consistently demonstrate selfishness, jealousy and paranoia. to a degree that i don't think it's good for most children to regularly watch (most, not all). the typical episode is this:
a train sees that another train has a job that he wants. the train decides to steal the job. the train significantly screws up the job. ultimately, with luck or help from others, it turns out that the train benefited from the original plan to steal the job.

I'm just waiting for when we can watch "real" movies together. Very psyched for our first Star Wars viewing...
Do kids actually pay attention to movies? I just have this mental picture of putting a DVD in and the kid half paying attention, half eating crayons.
you'd be surprised. Years ago I was watching "A League Of Their Own" with my 4-yr-old niece. The scene where the messenger comes into the locker room before the game to deliver the awful news. They never say it, he just hands her the telegram and she bursts into tears. My niece blurts out "I think her husband died."

it's the same thing, over and over.
What kids' show isnt the same thing over and over?
Also, the "greedy" train or the train that does something wrong always faces consequences because of their actions which they learn from. Do you really expect Thomas to have a running story line where in the next episode Toby says, "What a dbag Thomas was when he stole my job last week."? No...it's a kids show.
If you (the royal you) wanted to you could nit pick every kids show into something like that.
Parents deserve a lot of credit for some of the stuff they attend for their kids such as school music concerts , choir concerts. We did it with our kids and now go to our grandkid's stuff. Last Sunday we went to a dance recital that 2 granddaughters were in. That ordeal lasted 4 hours. A month ago another granddaughter was in a high school play that lasted 3 1/2 hours. I don't know how many band concerts etc I've sat through.
So far, the first year of kid pitch softball had been the worst. Thankfully, there is a 4 run cap per inning and a time limit for the game. There's only so many 7 walk innings a man can take.

I like the way the league 2 of my my granddaughters handle pitching. For 9 & 10 age group After 4 balls a batters own coach pitches to her; no walks. All hits are limited to singles and runners can only advance one base during a coach pitch situation.
The 11 & 12 year olds go to a 6 ball walk after 3 walks. Most pitching I saw at that age group rarely got into the 3 walk / inning scenario.

Just once I want the Clubhouse gang to ask Toodles for the wrong f'ing Mousekatool. Teach kids that just because the first attempt didn't work, doesn't mean you can get frustrated and throw a tantrum. Find another plan darn it.
Late entry to the potty training discussion, but our oldest daughter was very easy to train. She was 2.5 and she had become interested in sitting on the potty but no real progress. One day we were at Ikea and she Smaland (the kids play area) and wanted to go in there so bad. We told her to she had to be potty trained first (she was already at the height requirement) before she could play in there. Suddenly a light bulb went off in her head and she said she wanted to use the potty and sure enough she did. Within about three months she was completely trained with only about 3 or 4 overnight accidents in the bed and during the day.
My youngest daughter is about 2.5 now and over the winter she had interest in the potty but it has completely stopped now. Nothing will entice her. We can't even do the Ikea route again because she is still under the height limit by about eight inches,
We have kid #3 on the way. I know a few of you mention having 3. Seems like a game changer. Have to get a bigger car and switch from man to zone D.
Our oldest is 4. She is already causing problems, maybe because of the new one coming. Wife signed her up for summer camp. 3rd day in, my wife got a call saying our daughter is not listening at all and was sent to the "principal's office" (director of the rec center) twice today. If she does it again, she will not be allowed to come back... *sigh*
PFIDC - for the potty training... we tried everything and our first one just wouldn't do it. When we finally gave up and resigned to her being in diapers until she's 16, she finally started using the potty. Went well for a while then she went through a few months where she just kept deciding not to use the potty and peeing in her pants (never #2). That passed after 2 or 3 frustrating months where we tried everything. Now she's perfect during the day, but we're trying to figure out how to get her off night diapers. I feel like we're almost there, but she doesn't care when/if she's wet. So that whole "let them feel unpleasant" thing doesn't work on her.
TLDNR - all kids are different and they will do it when they are ready. Don't get frustrated trying to do it on your time, it will backfire. If you're lucky, they will be ready early.
My 7.5 month old started coughing last night, mucus, the works. Spiking a 102 fever at the moment. She hasn't popped a tooth yet so thinking maybe this is teething (although the fever=teething thing is questionable I hear?)
Hate to see her sick, but twice today she has fallen asleep on my chest in the living room. No shushing, no rocking, no swaying...just me kicking back and her falling asleep. Stuff like that makes a guy feel pretty damned special. Welp, back to my IPA.
Our doc always denied that teething could be causing fevers and snot. But time and time again, with those symptoms also came a tooth.
And yeah, as they get older they fall asleep on you less. It's kind of nice when they don't feel good and pass out on you - even in the middle of the night.
