It's been a really thrilling weekend for WBS Penguins hockey, mostly because of the skills competition the team held. Here is a link to the story about it... http://www.wbspenguins.com/News/News_Re ... Skills.asp
I also have pictures from that event in my webshots.com album (http://sports.webshots.com/album/557624492ZnSKqV) of my nieces at the meet-the-players event for the kids' club members before the skills competition and there are a lot of pics from the competition itself.
On to the games... Portland beat the Penguins 2-1 on Friday night. Then, the Penguins decided that they weren't going to lose again and showed a good effort in beating the Binghamton Senators the next night 4-2.
GOOD:
LW Jean-Francois Jacques - Has a 5 game point streak going. He scored the lone goal for the Pens on Friday with 2 seconds left, and then got in a shoving match with Shane Endicott. Any guy that hits Endicott gets some love on this report!
D Wade Skolney - Probably the only guy who showed any fire on Friday. He racked up 49 PIMs in the game, trying to fire up the team! He got in a fight with one guy and after it was broken up, another guy picked a fight with him. Until all of the misconducts got tacked on, there were 42 minutes from that incident (he also had a fight earlier in the game). Although I'm not a fan of fighting in hockey, Skolney had 3 fighting majors on Friday and they were all to fire up the team. Ultimately, it didn't work, but that was the best thing he could do for the team.
LW Daniel Carcillo - Carcillo had a great week. Although the scoresheet just shows him with 1 goal (on Saturday), he has been flying out there and is playing much smarter hockey than he has been lately. He gets bashed, and rightfully so, for his occasional stupidity with taking penalties, so he deserves this mention when he's improving.
UNDECIDED:
Gs Jeff Deslauriers, Devan Dubnyk - Neither were tested all that much. Both made the saves they should and allowed 2 goals in each game. Dubnyk had the bad luck of facing Sebastian Caron, who was standing on his head while stoning the Pens on Friday. They were solid... not great, not bad. They just did what they were supposed to.
BAD:
D/RW Wade Brookbank - No shots on the weekend and a mysterious 10-minute misconduct penalty on Friday. He showed some really surprising skill at the team skills competition, though. Everyone on the team had 2 shots in the breakaway competitions and Brookbank converted both of his! If only that carried over to games...
This week was supposed to be a 4 games in 5 nights stretch, but the game tonight against Syracuse was postponed because Syracuse couldn't get to Wilkes-Barre.
