are there cross-conference games?

I dont really follow AHL but would love to see WB/S play. I checked the Chicago wolves but they dont play this year...is it like the NHL where its every few years or is it playoffs only?

I haven't done any research but they definitely don't play each team in the other conference every year. It seems to be round-robin for out of conference, like the NFL.

They used to not play any games against the other conference until the championship round.
