2015 College Football Thread

Post by Sam's Drunk Dog »

And so we close the 2014 season with confirmation that the BIG TEN Master Race has started what will undoubtedly equal, if not surpass, the ACC-dominated era OSU ended.

:slug:

With the student-athletes gaining more power as the NCAA is reduced to rubble, the decision by Roquan Smith not to sign his LOI could significantly alter the recruiting process.

Players should have more power. The fact that you sign that LOI and they can still dump you before practices start is BS. Alot of these players do commit to coaches and build relationships with them. I know people are like college is for learning etc, but for these high end recruits it's about training for the NFL and finding the best way to get there. So it is BS for a school to lead a kid on have him sign his LOI then the coach that recruited them leave to go somewhere else a day later. The school knows they have all the power cause if the kid transfers he has to sit out a year. So while this may not cause a big wave, I don't blame the kid for continuing to weigh his options.

The dude and his new friend, the dude of Minnesota said Big 10 will push to expand this year, taking 2 ACC schools, therefore making the SEC take two more ACC schools and then the rest will go to the Big XII.

If you're a highly touted (5*) recruit, it's probably never in your best interest to sign the LOI. At that level teams will make room for you. With that being said, the transfer rules need to be tweaked. Sitting out a year is a while, but you still need to create an incentive for players to stick with the team they signed for. Lesser teams will just become farm teams for the Sabans and Meyers of CFB.

I always thought that if players had to sit out a year if they transfer, then head coaches under contract with a school should have to sit out a year if they go to a different school. Make those contracts and extensions that guys sign actually mean something.

I understand the sentiment here, but that type of rule would really hamper a team when their coach leaves the school for a non-lateral position or leaves coaching. For instance, when a coach leaves for the NFL the school would have a much harder time filling the position as only assistant coaches and unemployed coaches would be available.

I am not sure what the best solution is though.

NCAA puts West Virginia on probation for recruiting violations

I'm surprised that there wasn't anything posted here yet. Also, I love this critique of the NCAA from the Sporting News.

The NCAA is the worst organization in the history of sports.

This multi-billion dollar, tax-exempt organizing body of collegiate sports; this watchdog of all things pure and amateur, is in the middle of the fight of its life in both the courtroom and public perception. So what does it do?

Guess whose job, as athletic director at WVU, it was to oversee those sports from 2010-2013?

Guess who had been investigating WVU for months, knowing full well Luck was the athletic director at the very time NCAA violations had taken place?

Guess who then hired Luck to be its — are you ready for this? — regulatory executive vice president (a fancy title for top cop)?

I ask you, who gets it more than the NCAA?

"How do you talk your way out of this one?" one Power 5 athletic director told me Thursday morning. "The optics of it are so damaging."

Virginia Tech RB Shai McKenzie (Washington High grad and former Pitt commit) suspended indefinitely after being charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor for "carnal knowledge of a child between the ages of 13 and 15."

http://www.roanoke.com/news/crime/montg ... 8ae41.html

Interesting that McKenzie is charged with two counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor (misdemeanor), while the non-football player arrested along with him had a felony charged tacked on as well.

Don't know all of the facts yet, but I'd guess that McKenzie didn't get the felony because he slept with the 15 year old which technically isn't a felony in VA. We'll learn more. This is gross.
