It's been a miserable weekend for WBS Pens fans. Not too much to cheer for except for Filewich's unexpected AHL Fastest Skater title at the Skills Competition. The team lost to Philly 7-2 and Bridgeport 4-1. In doing so, they also lost Tyler Kennedy (upper body) and Ryan Lannon (hand) to injuries.
GOOD:
C Rob Schremp - This is the first time he's been on this list in a while. He backed his way in by being one of the few players to stay out of the penalty box and Schremp also scored one of only 2 even-strength Penguin goals while somehow being a +2 rated player while his team was outscored 11-3.
UNDECIDED:
G Jeff Deslauriers - The good side is that he had a shutout going for 18+ minutes of the Bridgeport game. The down side to that was he got thrown out for arguing a poor roughing call against him and then bumping the ref with his chest pads. This really killed Wilkes-Barre's momentum. Once he got thrown out, the rest of the team seemed like they were fighting the refs more than playing hockey. They took 9 straight penalties at one point.
BAD:
G Andrew Penner - Penner gave up 11 goals in 5 periods. Granted, he faced 16 power plays, but your goaltender needs to be your best penalty killer. In the Phantom game, he gave up 4 goals on 5 power plays. Not his best work. He was riding a pretty impressive hot streak.
LW Daniel Carcillo - Carcillo went back to his old ways of last weekend and last year. He took a slashing minor in each of the 2 games and argued the one on Saturday to the point where he got an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty and led to him being benched yet again. I would be very surprised if he wasn't a healthy scratch at the next game. He was even sent to Wheeling for a bit after pulling this garbage last year. I don't think that's out of the question either right now.
The latest word on Kennedy's injury is about a week. Lannon is still unknown, leading to the Pens bringing up Curtiss Patrick. He did OK, but I would have rather seen Bissonnette given a chance. He's on fire in Wheeling right now. This coming weekend includes a Friday night away game in Norfolk (Ouch) and a home game on Saturday against Hamilton.
I'm sure Coach Richards will be ripping into the team at practice this week due to the discipline issues that this team has caused over the weekend. They completely collapsed on themselves. This team is better than what they showed this weekend and everyone on the ice and in the stands knows it.
