2024 NHL Trade Deadline Discussion

Post by FLPensFan »

Let's use this thread to discuss deals that have happened or appear to be imminent to happening, and try to limit to discussing just those deals (or posting deals and close to finished deals).

Starting this thread off tonight since Friedman is reporting that Dallas and Calgary are working on a deal for Chris Tanev tonight...

I don't get why Conroy is in such a rush to accept that deal. Unless the prospect is legit. I would think Tanev would net a 1st round pick from one of the contenders. Only accept trades early if you are getting overpayment.

Edit:
Elliotte Friedman
@FriedgeHNIC
The prospect is Artem Grushnikov

Never heard of him. Doesn't seem like a great return for Calgary to rush into accepting.

Or accept trades early if nobody is coming close to your offer, and you realize teams don't value your player as much as the media does/did.

Seeing the trade is a 2nd, a conditional 3rd, and prospect Artem Grushnikov. Grushnikov is a 20 year old, 2nd round pick defenseman. He was rated the 10th best prospect in the Stars 21st ranked system. Athletic says his stats point to someone who never makes the NHL, or at best a 6/7 d-man, but his skating, length, and ability to defend are attributes that say otherwise.

Have to see what the conditions for the 3rd is to upgrade, but it is an average at best return. Probably not what Calgary expected to get.

EDIT: Seravalli now reporting that NJ is also involved in the deal. Tanev was routed through NJ, who is retaining salary on Tanev. NJ is getting a 4th round pick for the retention, and a NJ reserve list player (rights but not playing) Cole Brady is also part of the deal.

Still some confusion on the retention, because Dallas twitter account seems to list the trade as NJ retaining 50% and Calgary not retaining anything. So we'll see in a few hours how it shakes out. But still, Tanev with at least 50% retention a good deal for Dallas for sure.

Chris Johnston says Flames only receive the conditional 2026 3rd rounder if Dallas makes it to Stanley Cup finals. If not, no extra pick.

Usually when salary needs retained to this degree the deal should be better. This seems horrible.

The deal was being laughed at online last night from the Calgary side. Big win for Dallas. What I can't figure is why/how NJ got involved to take on 50% of Tanev's salary. Like, why?

They only retained 50% of 50%, meaning 25%. So, they retained 1.125M to gain a 4th round pick. They have tons of cap space due to Dougie Hamilton on LTIR and not expected back until the playoffs. Why not do it, I guess.

A few more side points from Pierre LeBrun on the Tanev trade:

--Vancouver, Edmonton, Colorado and Toronto were reportedly the other finalist
--LeBrun said Calgary did have an offer that included a 1st rounder, but Calgary had to take back multi-year salary to get the 1st (LeBrun thinks it may have been Codi Ceci from Edmonton or Ryan Johansen from Colorado)
--Feeling is Toronto didn't want to part with their 1st rounder, and they don't have a 2nd round pick, taking them out of the running.
--LeBrun also said teams like Arizona and Philly, who are shopping d-men, aren't happy a first wasn't included because that may have set the market in the buyers favor.

Frank Seravalli has Reilly Smith at #3 and Jake Guentzel at #4 on his trade board.

I've also heard some random noise that teams could come calling on Ruhwedel as a cheap, depth defenseman for a playoff run.

It’s bizarre that the Devils and Canes are both using cap space to help other teams make trades.

Carolina had about 6.6M in deadline day cap space available. They'll eat about 687K of salary, and gain a 6th. If you can draft well, picking up any extra picks is worth it to some teams. This doesn't hinder them from making deadline moves.

In fact, Friedman stated that Vancouver and Carolina were pretty far along in trade talks for Elias Pettersson, to the point that Vancouver had to go to Pettersson and say "You need to take a minute and decide if you want to be here long term or not, because if not, we've got a deal we can make to trade you." Pettersson decided to stay, gave his agents permission to work on extension (which he initially said he would only do after the season), and they are expected to finalize his deal in the next few days.

Not that it has any bearing, but TIOPS says that Reilly Smith is as good as gone and while offers of a 2nd round pick are out there, Pittsburgh wants a player for player swap for Smith.
They also noted that Dubas still really likes Noah Hanafin and they could still explore a sign and trade type scenario.

Take the pick for Smith and run. Use the $5mill in cap savings elsewhere.

I guess the question whether its a 2nd to Pittsburgh and we have to retain some salary, or no retention? If its no retention, then certainly take the pick and run.

The UFA crop isn't really the best for shopping next summer. I still wonder if we could see a Bunting for Smith swap. Bunting is a Dubas guy and there were reports he wanted him here in Pittsburgh. Bunting is doing a little better than Smith, but Smith's playoff experience and production is going to be sought after.

Bunting is a guy I would gladly take for Smith. Bunting makes 500k less and could slot in on Malkins LW

Sounding like NJ and Calgary are talking Jakob Markstrom again. There were some talks previously, but Calgary didn't want to retain salary. NJ reportedly saying now that they can do it without retention.

1st round pick and Alex Holtz believed to be part of a potential package for Markstrom.
