Rendell: Appeal to NHL possible if Penguins reject deal

Post by jjj5032 »

interesting twist in the neverending story.

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/07023/756097-100.stm

The deal offered by local officials to the Penguins for a new arena is so good that, if the team tries to leave town, Gov. Ed Rendell would take his case directly to the National Hockey League, Mr. Rendell said today.

But Mr. Rendell revealed more about the offer by the state, city and county, including some sweeteners, and repeated his statement of last week that it is the best deal any sports team in the state has received in recent years to build a new facility.

"We do not want to have to go to the NHL Board of Governors. We want to conclude this deal," Mr. Rendell said. "But we will have no alternative," given the proposal, if the Penguins reject it.

But one sticking point is that the team wants to be compensated for a $10 million payment it owes Isle of Capri, which had a development deal with the team to build an arena if if won a license to build a casino in the city. Isle of Capri lost, triggering the $10 million payment. Mr. Rendell said public officials are not inclined to cover that debt.

my opinion is the penguins latched on to the I.O.C. and therefore have to live with paying the $10 million. They gambled, they lost Boo hoo, life goes on.

This gets uglier and uglier by the minute.

From http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsbu ... 89915.html
"They kept telling us the Kansas City deal was so great," Rendell said today during a visit to Pittsburgh. "If the Kansas City deal was so great, why are they going to Houston?"
I don't know when or if the two sides will be sitting down at the table next, but everyone's starting to stir up some pretty bad blood again.

Mr. Rendell said the state is offering some funds for infrastructure and would even be willing to direct some tourism funds for advertising at a new arena.
infrastructure?

The 10 mil is between the Pens and IoC and I agree with Rendell - but if these 'sweetners' somehow create 10 mil in additional profit for the Pens, well...

Rendell's calling their bluff on KC, and I hate to say it, but he's absolutely right.

Actually it was Balsillie, but I agree with other posters that they signed an agreement with IoC and lost, now if they want a new arena with public funds they should pay IoC the $10 million they said they would.

The IoC 10 million is just another example of the Pens trying to squeeze out the best possible deal. The Pens made that agreement, obviously they knew there was a chance IoC wouldn't get the license, so they're the ones who are responsible for it. That one is a bit of an unreasonable demand, but I'm sure some of the state's demands are unreasonable too.

It pains me to say it, but I pretty much agree with everything that Rendell said, besides that dumb comment about Lemieux being offended.

One angle Rendell has to use is that Ed Snider is on the
BOG. Ed Snider is also a principal in one of the awarded casino licenses in Philly. Ed Snider owes Rendell a favor.

This could be a trump card for Slick Eddie that he is threatening to play if necessary.

agreed. Like I said before. If your main objective was to keep the team in pittsburgh why do you create that kind of barrier. I dont think the State is liable for that $10M the Pens promised IoC if they didnt get the Liscense.

Im still alittle confused on the Barden thing. Unless he is contributing more money, why would he now want claim on the development rights and parking revenues?

Wow. I wish this wasn't going to the media. This could only cause more trouble. I hope everyone takes a deep breath, and can sit down again and work this out. Just bad mouthing on both sides may hurt this.

I truly think the government is trying everything they can to keep the team here. The Pens are right about trying to get the best deal, but you have to meet in the middle somewhere. I just want them to have another meeting to work this out.

I agree. It seems like they are just starting to snipe back and forth through the media, which IMO can't be helping matters. Cooler heads need to prevail and get back to the bargaining table.

It wont cause more trouble. Mario can't be shady now that the lid has been blown off. Now he will cave.

He is dead-on with that quote, but Mario and company will just spin it as exploring all possible options so they know what they have to work with. Like any shopper, look at all the stores and prices first.

Burkle is a professional. Meeting in the middle is not what made him so successful. This deal can be a win-win with total capitulation by the other side because it really isn't necessary for Rendell/SEA to get some kind of middle deal since they won't gain any financial benefit.

If the Pens meet in the middle who is to say they won't have the funds to take a contract 3 or 4 years from now that could put them over the top in a Cup run?

Capitulation & vengeance. That is what everybody has been begging for all these years and now people don't have the stomach to extract it.

Rendell taking potshots is not good. Let Mario save some face here, for crying out loud. If this thing is done the way we want it to, these guys have to get along with each other for a long time, belittling one another is not in anybody's best interests.

You're dead on here with both points. I certainly don't have the stomach for it, even when I am convinced that the end result will be what we all want.

I agree to a point. The PEns should get all they can out of this. They just better not move because they didn't get everything they wanted. When I say middle, I guess I'm saying they have to have some concessions. ( I didn't mean exactly in the middle).

Anyway, I don't want capitulation and vengeance, I don't think my heart can take it. (I'm only 28!)

I know it is going to get worse before it gets better, but that doesn't mean I have to like it going into the media and having crapshots taken there.

Take an enhanced fish oil capsule (240/200) every hour (build up to it) you are awake during the day. I had my blood tests done last week and my HDL (good) cholesterol is actually higher than my LDL (bad) cholesterol, 87 to 79. Your heart will be able to take anything...

no way in hell any appeal to the NHL will prevent the pens from moving. good luck winning that case in court if the pens really do want to move.
