Re: Penguins want Jagr back?!

Post by penmyst »

Why does this nonsense keep cropping up?

Jagr might have a couple years left in the tank for pro hockey. NHL level? Maybe. Maybe not. Part of the reason he left was he couldn't handle the 82 game seasons any longer.

That means he has a very small window to make as much money as he can, to hold him over for the rest of his life.

Why would he play for the Pens at or near vet league minimum? The Pens aren't going to throw 5 mil at him. Why would he sign here for several millions less than he could grab in Europe? And he could do that with less games to play.

I wouldn't personally mind seeing Jagr return to the Pens and finish his hockey career. But the numbers just don't seem to fit. And I don't blame Jagr one bit if he looks to get as much cash as he can during the limited playing time he has left.

I can't help but laugh at the posters who sardonically make remarks about Jagr being "about the money". I'm absolutely sure any of those people are also about the money in their own personal lives. They don't work for well below their worth, but somehow if a pro athlete won't do that he's some sort of greedy, heartless bastard.

I don't think your sarcasm detector is set right. The funny bit isn't Jagr, it's the people who keep falling for the "I'd go back to Pittsburgh for the league minimum" crap. Well, OK, his Gamblor problem is a little funny.

This. I am one who said that with Jagr, it's always been all about the money - and I didn't say it sardonically. There are the Crosbys, Malkins, and Orpiks of the world who, while still making a good deal of coin, take a little less than they probably could because they like the place they're at. Then there are the Jagr's and Malones of the world, who want to cash in while they can. I've never called either of those guys a "greedy, heartless bastard", and I don't know anyone who has. But to think that Jagr will come back at league minimum, or at any salary that Shero can realistically afford, is about as realistic as thinking that Malone will want to come back and play for Pittsburgh because he was born here. Just foolish thinking, IMO.

Rossi really seems to be trying to rile up the fan base with this nonsense. I think that's pretty crummy of him. Give it a rest. Can we keep our memories in the past? Jagr was great here, but he's almost 40 now. Give it up. He's not going to come back here to play for peanuts, and if he does he's going to be a shell of what he used to be just like Kovalev was.

I would be completely shocked if Jagr ever played in this town again.

Well, if he is going to be a shell of what he used to be, he would be looking to play for peanuts.... right? :P

You just said a few pages ago that Ray Shero offered him a contract.

I have it on good account that the Penguins are going to float a contract somewhere in the neighborhood of $750k for two years, so Jagr can retire in Pittsburgh. This is still in it's infancy, but make sure you are paying attention Thursday and Friday :)

Well shero can offer him a contract, but that doesn't mean Jagr will take it.

No matter how much Jagr says about how much he loved playing in Pittsburgh, I just don't see him coming back. Although I would cheer loudly if he did!

Just a thought...he could come back so he could retire as a Penguin. He started in Pittsburgh...maybe he'd like to make a brief comeback & then, like Mario, re-retire as a Penguin. Barrasso did it - Bill Guerin did it - why not Jagr?

I think a lot of why the fans are bitter about Jagr & turned on him was media generated too. The media tells the fans things that the fans too readily believe because they're angry about other issues. It happened to Barrasso as well as Jagr. Jagr was driven away from Pittsburgh as much by fans as he was by anything else.
Barrasso sort of sums up what happens in THIS video.

I don't trust that link, Ginger. Probably a nasty porn site. I'll let others click on it first.

"What can you say about Jagr?" said Michalek. "He's unbelievable. He's 39 but playing like a 20-year-old, flying on the ice. He's so strong."

GMRS will sort it out

Man, these fake quotes are wrecking havoc on the less cynical posters. Kinda funny, kinda sad. Especially considering the Ray Shero one was presented in first-person...as though he was the one posting.

Barrasso was a jerk. He was a jerk with teammates and the media. To say that the reason fans hated him was because of some conspiracy by the media is silly.

Same for Jagr. He earned his stripes. It wasn't the media that was moody. It wasn't the media that wanted out of this town.

Frankly, the media members don't get together and collude about anything. If a guy is a good guy to 9 out of 10 reporters, then 9 out of 10 reporters aren't going to have a bad word to say about them. Obviously, if you are a jerk to a reporter, he'd lay the badmouth on you. But if that was the exception, and not the rule? He'd be drowned out by a cacophony of reporters singing his praises.

Some athletes are jerks that hide it better than Barrasso did. Tom never tried to hide it. He was notoriously nasty to backup goalies. He was nasty to many in the media.

I sure would hope Pens fans don't boo Jagr if he comes back for a retired jersey ceremony. But if they did, I wouldn't be upset with them. They'd have every right to be upset with him for leaving as he did.

All things worked out. I'm glad he did leave. It paved the way for MAF, Malkin, and Crosby.. along with a Cup. Maybe more on the way.
