I was going to mention the Caipirinha. Love a well made one but have had some from a bartender that didn't know what he was doing.

See if you can find an Abuelo 7 anos or 12 anos from Panama. I got a few bottles of the 7 year at the airport (Panama) for $12 each and then had to order the 7 year for $21 from a local store. A friend brought back a bottle of the 12 year.

Drink that over ice with one lime wedge. Good stuff!

Hmm.... the only Central American rum I've ever had is Ron Zacapa. Have to replenish the stores before the weekend, so I'll keep a weather eye open for that Abuelo stuff.

From my travels in Belize, I highly recommend 1 Barrell rum. It is a great dark rum, not sure how easy it is to find in the US, but it is sold

Good dark rum is very tasty. When we went to the Caribbean last spring I picked up a bottle (forget the name now) at the duty free shop. Ended up drinking it straight or with a cube or two every night.

Vodka-Firefly (been great these last few hot weeks).

Firefly sweet tea vodka mixed in lemonade is super hero good.

my wife has been making a punch drink with that cranberry juice, lime juice and sprite. it's killer

i'll take that recipe whenever

2 cups cranberry juice
1/2 cup fresh squeezed lemon juice
1 cup Firefly
ICE
stir together gently then
add 12oz sprite/sierra mist

killer. never would have occurred to me to make a punch

Mostly vodka for me, with the occasional whiskey. My favorite every day (lol) vodka is Stoli which I will mix with pretty much anything. Red bull, Club soda, water, cranberry juice, pepsi, ginger ale, orange juice, tomato juice, etc etc etc you get the idea. My favorite vodka is stoli elit, which I drink straight, preferably with a couple of blue cheese stuffed olives, but I don't drink it very often considering they stopped carrying it in state stores, and when they did, it was >$50 a bottle. I like Jameson and Crown Royal for whiskeys, I find them both nice to shoot and to mix. Whiskey is the only liquor that I can really stand to both shoot and mix. No rum, gin very sparingly. Too many words.

good vodka talk. unfortunately i've soured on all of the olives they carry at my grocery store. if i find a jar of good ones soon it'll be time for some good straight vodka. i generally just get grey goose if i'm going straight, but i'm looking to experiment.

i'm very glad you brought up bloody marys. anyone have a great recipe? 90% of bloody marys i find undrinkable, but when they're good they are one of the best drinks i've ever had. anyone else think the bloody marys at the Casino are outstanding?

After I read Richard Marcinko's book Rogue Warrior I decided to try Bombay Sapphire. Marcinko was one of the very first Navy Seals and the founder/first captain of Team Six (there were only two teams at the time - he came up with Six to fool the Soviets).

Anyway, while he was in Vietnam they'd go on demolition/sabotage missions during the day, go drink Bombay in a village somewhere, start a bar fight, and then go cheat on their wives.

I'm lucky that a lot of my friends like gin too. When we get bottle service its almost always Bombay. Best is to drink straight with ice and lime.

i definitely would like to expand on my gin tastes. there was an article about gin i just read that makes me want to appreciate it more. i'm bombay sapphire all the way too at this point though. ever since my first cross country driving trip and the things that happened in vegas on it, bombay gin and tonics have become my special occasion drink. just before a wedding or kicking off a beach vacation or actually anytime i'm in an airport bar and even this july 4th - it's my go-to starter drink.

i may have to try it with club soda next time though.

I don't really do mixers with the good rum. Either just on the rocks or with a fresh lime wedge. Try it neat first to taste the layers of flavors and then adjust from there to suit your tastes.

The 12 year is pretty complex and full bodied. The 7-year is sheer heaven. I prefer the 7 for "everyday" . The 12 is only for special occasions.

at the bar i'm about getting a nice scotch and usually neat - though at this one place they serve it with a gigantic block of ice which is impossible to refuse. but when i'm home reading on a sunny balcony i find it hard to enjoy a neat drink. but i'm eager to start working over some rums either way.

actually that's the brand at Martin's that i've recently had a disappointing jar of. maybe i was eating too many. i never got the jalapeno ones (usually giant queen or the large premium) but ya, for a bloody mary

never even knew about clam juice. sounds sickeningly good in a way though.

re Bloody Marys.

I make them from "scratch" by buying the spicy V8 juice and mixing that with ice, Grey Goose Vodka, lemon juice, (non-sweetened) lime juice, hot sauce (use your favorite or experiment. I usually just go with tabasco), worcestershire sauce, freshly ground sea salt, and freshly ground black pepper. I don't really measure anything just put a dash of everything other than the V8 Juice and vodka. The amount of vodka to V8 depends on how much of a buzz I want.

Bloody Marys just don't sit well with me. The combination of spicy, sweet, alcohol...yuck. I don't like tomato juice by itself though.

Nakama on the Southside makes them with wasabi. LOVE it.
