Here’s some interesting comparative data on handgun stopping power. Over a 10-year period, the firearms instructor for an Ohio police department compiled records about every shooting where he could get data. Mr. Ellifritz tracked caliber, type of bullet (if known), where the bullet hit, and whether the person shot was physically incapacitated or killed. He has data for 10 handgun calibers and lumped data for rifles and shotguns. The interesting thing is that most of the different cartridges produced similar results in terms of percent incapacitated by one shot, percent of incapacitating shots, average number of hits until incapacitation, and accuracy. Lower-caliber rounds (.22, .25, .32) had much higher chances that they would fail to incapacitate, but everything from .380 on up was actually pretty close. The bottom line is that the data appears to indicate that there really isn't that much difference between most defensive-handgun cartridges. (The data also shows, not surprisingly, that if you really want to stop or incapacitate someone, your best bet is a shotgun.)

That's really useful info, especially for those of us still in first purchase limbo.

I shot a .40 S&W for the first time a couple weeks ago, and found it to be somewhat..... I don't want to say 'easier' than .45 ACP, but the difference in recoil allowed me to get the sights back on target more quickly. I'm still leaning towards the bigger round, tho, since I live in California and mag capacity isn't an issue. (We're limited to 10 rounds max, regardless of caliber.)

Shooting about 5 blocks from where I was having dinner last night.

With an influx of drugs coming into the area, I definitely want a small frame pistol to carry with me. I'll depend on the 12 gauge when im home, but fits hitting the shan. Armed robberies, burglaries, and other means of people getting drug money is getting ridiculous in my small town.

That said, anyone have experience with the S&W M&P Shield?

I just ordered one from Davidson’s (galleryofguns.com) for pickup through Island Firearms. This is basically an early birthday present to myself.

I want to say I had a really good purchase experience buying though Davidson’s. At the time I decided on the Single Ten for my purchase, the gun was out of stock. I told them to send me an email when more guns came in. I got the email on Tuesday afternoon, and paid a deposit online of about 1/3 of the price. As part of the checkout process, you get a list of local participating gun stores, each of which sets its own ultimate total price for the gun you want. Essentially, the local gun shops bid on getting your business. I selected Island Firearms on Neville Island, which was offering the lowest price within a 25-mile radius. Davidsons sent out the gun to Island Firearms on Wednesday via FedEx overnight, and I picked it up on Thursday, where I also paid the remainder of the price and went through the PICS check. It was really easy and convenient, and the process basically lets you price shop all of your local stores (at least the ones that participate with galleryofguns.com).

Also, in addition to any manufacturer warranties, Davidsons has its own “lifetime replacement” warranty. If anything goes wrong with a gun you buy from them, they will replace it. If no replacement is available, Davidsons will repair it for you at their cost.

Interesting article! Just more proof its about shot placement rather than caliber for the most part.

In the .40, yes. It's really, small but doesn't snap as much as other compact pistols.

I went to the gun shop today actually. I was just there to look and ended up holding a Ruger LC9 wth laser. It was priced at $420. I've heard a drawback of this gun is a long trigger pull and it can cause it to be less than accurate.

If it's Double action only and striker fired it's going to have a heavier pull than one that can so single action with an external hammer. Practice though, even if it's a heavy pull you can keep shots on target.

just remember with those long pull guns like the LCP9,LCP, Boady Gaurd 380, that they aren't designed to shoot bulleyes. They are made for a specific job of being safe and accurate enough to ward off a bad guy at 0 to 10 yards. Even with the the long trigger pull, when the adrenaline is rushing you won't even notice it. The body is a very big target at close distance.

you do need to practice with that gun because you are going to need followup shots on target. I usually practice 4 to the body and 2 to the head with my LCP. That leaves me with 1 round left to account for a miss. The quicker you can do that drill and stay on paper the better off you are going to be. The drill starts with the gun holstered in your pocket, you draw the gun safely and then take your 4 + 2 shots. Try and keep the gun as close to your body as possible at all times. Just practice the draw unloaded until it becomes muscle memory, its the most dangerous part and a lot of people new to guns try to draw too fast and end up pulling the trigger accidentally.

Mt. Pleasant has always been extremely poor and had a rough appearance, but had been relatively safe. I think the problem started getting worse around 1998 when they opened a group home near the high school and brought a bunch of trouble makers into the school district. I think it presented these people with a new area to tell their friends about and they slowly started moving into the area. If you drove through town and didn't know anything about it, you'd assume there is a drug/crime problem simply by looking at how run down it is. These people fit right in.

That said, crimes like these are often between two parties that know each other. Packing heat while dining at Leo's or Grille 31 won't make your dinner any safer.

I feel you there. And it turns out that it was drug related. I think the main problem is drugs in this area, plus cheaper rent than anywhere else and a plethora of low-paying jobs (tons of stores, restaurants, etc) brings them all here.

Went to the range yesterday. Shot a few different pistols. The Walther PPQ is awesome. So smooth.. so light.. so.... dreamy.

My buddy also got a Troy Defense 5.56 from Dicks for $1000. If anyone is in the market for one, thats the best deal I've seen almost ever.

I used to just make fun of people from Mt. Pleasant for being dumb (no offense to your personally, sir)... I guess I might have to tweak my insults a bit. Looks like they're possibly trying to reclaim their old monicker of "Helltown".

When I heard about this shooting and the recent drug sting they set up I was a little surprised. I too would want some heat around. If there are drug deals, there are drug users. If there are drug users, there are dopesick druggies that'll do anything for drugs.

Something I recently ran across may be of interest to the rest of you. I knew that a couple years ago Marlin was purchased by Cerberus/Freedom Group, which also owns companies like Remington and Bushmaster. The new owners closed the Marlin factory in Connecticut, fired all of the workers, and moved production to Remington-owned factories in New York and Kentucky. Apparently, even a couple years later, the new factories are having serious problems with quality control. I’ve seen people post pictures of Marlins with canted sights, with dovetails cut in the wrong places, with stocks that fit so poorly to the receiver that you can see daylight though the gaps, with chipped stocks, with scope-mounting screws drilled off center, and with bare-wood foreends that were installed and shipped without being stained or finished. One guy related a story that he was having extraction problems with his new Marlin, and he found that the chamber had been rifled! Another guy’s new gun wouldn’t extract, and he quickly discovered that no extractor had been installed. Another guy’s gun was so roughly finished on the internals that the only way he could get the action to move (even with plenty of lubrication) was to loosen all of the screws. If any of my fellow LGP gun owners might be in the market for a new Marlin, you might want to think again or at least take a *very* careful look at the gun before you buy it. This really sucks. I own a compact 1894C in .357 Magnum that I bought around 10 years ago, and I really like that gun. A Marlin 39A in .22LR has been on my wish list for a while, and for some reason I also want a .45-70 Guide Gun (even though I don't know what I'd do with it).

I’ve been meaning to buy one of those for my Kahr. I hear Crossbreed makes great stuff. I presently use a simple Uncle Mike’s nylon holster for IWB carry, and I want something better. I also use a DeSantis Nemesis for pocket carry and a Fobus OWB paddle holster for carrying in cold weather when I have a coat over the gun.

Windham Weaponry took over the old Bushmaster plant after Freedom Group moved them out after they bought the name from Windham. Freedom is building a company like GM, lots of internal competition result in crap competing against other crap and general quality control issues.

It’s really a shame. The problem is that there’s really nowhere else to go for a lot of Marlin’s products. I mean, if the Freedom Group turns companies like Remington, Bushmaster, or Para into crap, there are plenty of other places to buy bolt-action hunting rifles (Savage, Ruger, Winchester, Tikka, Sako, CZ, etc.), ARs (about a billion companies), and 1911s (Colt, Kimber, Springfield, Ruger, S&W, SIG, Dan Wesson, and many others), but there’s no good alternate for a great deal of Marlin’s product line.

Anyone ever buy a handgun as a gift? How's that work?

Depends on your state and how comfortable you are technically lying on the 4473 when you purchase from a dealer. SC has no laws or regulation on person to person transfers provided the other person lives in SC as well. If your states require some kind of registration it could be tricky.
