he has (or had) a short shelf-life because of that, though.

Aziz Ansari is not funny at all. He seems like someone that is such a pushover that I could get away with walking up to him and punching him in the face too, which is even better.

Some of his stories are outrageously funny. Taking his friend to a brothel, talking about being in Iraq, etc. Great stuff.

My top 10

George Carlin, Richard Pryor, Eddie Izzard, Louis CK, Mitch Hedberg, Lewis Black, Bill Hicks, Sam Kinison, Bill Cosby, Billy Connolly.

If I were ranking the top ten most influential comedians, the list would look a fair bit different. But these are the guys (and, sorry ladies, they are always guys) whose senses of humor, points of view and deliveries most entertain me.

I think that's the practice of drying and preserving meat.

Eddie Izzard
Hands down the most original and inventive comedian of the last generation, imo. Only stays out of the top two because I will stab anyone who does not acknowledge George Carlin and Richard Pryor (either order, first equal, however you want to say it) as the two greatest comedians who ever lived.

That's a pretty solid list given your criteria. Never been a fan of CK though and Lewis Black is mostly 'meh'.

I like that you actually learn stuff from Izzard. A lot of his stuff is based around history or has a historical theme and he has clearly researched his material. It's not just swear words and a punchline. The whole Dressed to Kill show is awesome.

I love how completely disjointed Izzard is on stage. It's literally like stream-of-consciousness, as if he's saying everything off the cuff. But it most assuredly isn't; about five years ago I got to see him perform at the Coronet Theater in L.A., which only seats about 75 people. He was testing material that has been the core of his act ever since. So I got to see "Jazz Chicken" when he was still using the Chuck Mangione song (which technically wasn't legal, and is why he now improvises a melody during the bit). (None of that will make any sense to anyone who hasn't seen his more recent stuff.)

I've seen him at the Coronet, Dolby nee Kodak Theater, the Nokia Theater and the Hollywood Bowl (where he was the first stand up comedian to headline in the venue's history, and the crowd was treated to him running up to the top of the bowl and a festival of fanimation set to Izzard's material.... the finale of course being "Death Star Canteen a la Lego".)
