Re: The Travel Thread
We are planning to take the train from South Bend into Chicago for our vacation next week. We were planning on taking the double stroller (which folds up, but is still big) on the train. I can see this being an issue. Anyone have any experiences with something like this on a train ?

You should be able to store it in the luggage area of the car you're in. Not an overhead bin, but a luggage area in the front/back of the car.eddysnake wrote:We are planning to take the train from South Bend into Chicago for our vacation next week. Looking for an out of the ordinary amusement park?

I think the last one would be kind of fun, don't know how much I'd want to pay for it.

Re: The Travel Thread
is there a way to find out what 7 day travel window will have the lowest airfare prices? i could swear one of the major sites used to have this option.
id like to make a week long florida trip between new years day and april 30th. the week doesnt matter much - im just trying to see if theres a way to determine exactly which days i should fly out and come back for the cheapest trip.

Re: The Travel Thread
Likely a few days after new years and before MLK weekend. After mlk day and before Valentines Day may be good also. After that its expensive until late March or early April depending on Easter. At least this has been my experience.

February is usually a cheaper month to travel.

If you use kayak.com, choose "make my date flexible" then "flex month". You can then put in the amount of days you want to travel and the month.pittsoccer33 wrote:is there a way to find out what 7 day travel window will have the lowest airfare prices? i could swear one of the major sites used to have this option.

Considering a few destinations for next June - Germany (Munich, with possible trips to Austria and Switzerland), Italy (Florence, with possible trips to a couple of the surrounding regions), or Hawaii. We'll be going with our two daughters (10, 13). Does anyone have any recommendations, pros/cons, tips for any of these areas? We're planning on two weeks.

I think it's awesome that you're considering Germany and Italy. I'd toss Hawaii right off that list as I'm not much of a beach bum and it just seems purely touristy there, but what do I know?MWB wrote:Considering a few destinations for next June - Germany (Munich, with possible trips to Austria and Switzerland), Italy (Florence, with possible trips to a couple of the surrounding regions), or Hawaii. My vote is for Germany/Austria/Switzerland. I think there would be more to worry about in Italy, but again, what do I know. I'm just basing this off what I see on Travel Channel.

Do you plan on renting a car? You could do something like this: Munich-Salzburg-Innsbruck-Lago di Garda-Verona-Bologna-Florence-Pisa-Rome. A nice mixture of interesting cities, great scenery, and also lots of opportunities for swimming and hiking.MWB wrote:Considering a few destinations for next June - Germany (Munich, with possible trips to Austria and Switzerland), Italy (Florence, with possible trips to a couple of the surrounding regions), or Hawaii. I would do Hawaii out of those 3 and save the Europe trip for when the kids are older and will appreciate the scenery/history more.MWB wrote:Considering a few destinations for next June - Germany (Munich, with possible trips to Austria and Switzerland), Italy (Florence, with possible trips to a couple of the surrounding regions), or Hawaii. i was actually thinking about this last night. how difficult is it for an american driver to drive in europe with minimal understanding of the language? thinking about france/italy for honeymoonGaucho wrote:Do you plan on renting a car? I had no problem driving in Germany. Just get a GPS but make sure there is an English setting. Also, all of mainland Europe drives on the right side so it won't be too big of an adjustment.Letang Is The Truth wrote:i was actually thinking about this last night. how difficult is it for an american driver to drive in europe with minimal understanding of the language? thinking about france/italy for honeymoonGaucho wrote:Do you plan on renting a car? Re: The Travel Thread
It shouldn't be much of a problem, I'd think, but I'm not driving myself, so I wouldn't really know. Italy is a little tricky, though. Oserving the traffic rules seems to be optional for most of them.Letang Is The Truth wrote:i was actually thinking about this last night. how difficult is it for an american driver to drive in europe with minimal understanding of the language? thinking about france/italy for honeymoonGaucho wrote:Do you plan on renting a car? I think my plan for an inexpensive trip to the beach is going to be drive to the beach Saturday morning, leave at about 9 or 10 and stop at a hotel 1 hour inland, then complete the drive back on Sunday.

Re: The Travel Thread
We're thinking we would probably rent a car. We've looked into rail travel, but seems like it would be limiting. We'd probably just do one area (Germany or Italy) instead of trying to cram too much into two weeks. But maybe that would be an option as well.Gaucho wrote:Do you plan on renting a car? Re: The Travel Thread
Yeah, I think renting a car is definitely the better option for a family of four. And of course, instead of making it one long drive, you could stay somewhere in Austria for a week and make trips to Munich, Salzburg etc., then stay the second week somewhere in Northern Italy. Less hassle for sure and you'd even have the option to just park the kids at a lake or whatever if they don't feel like sightseeing. If they're not too young to be left on their own. I'm not a parent, so maybe I'm being naive here.MWB wrote:We're thinking we would probably rent a car. We've looked into rail travel, but seems like it would be limiting.
