When people say "this is all over Facebook." how much is it really all over Facebook? Is it every other post or what?

Honestly, yes, it is. I've never seen a phenomenon like this in all my years on the Interwebs. At one point this past week, literally every other post was an ice bucket video.PensFanInDC wrote:When people say "this is all over Facebook." how much is it really all over Facebook? I still despise people who are doing this to be "cool" with a little bowl of water and a couple ice cubes and I know your worthless @$$ isn't donating any money to any ALS charity.
My sisters-in-law both did that, reminds me of the cause-heads in PCU. Then her 4 year old nephew "challenged" my 4 year old daughter.

Not so much Facebook for me, but the PS3 Youtube app has preset channels and they might as well just all be IBC. Trends/News/Comedy/Music, doesn't matter.PensFanInDC wrote:When people say "this is all over Facebook." how much is it really all over Facebook? Is it every other post or what?

Re: Official LGP Facebook Complaint Thread
In the past 2 days, I've seen 2 people I'm friends with (who don't know each other) post "I've decided to stop wearing underwear."
Along those lines, another 2 people I'm friends with (again 2 people that don't know each other) posted about 5 minutes apart that just won money on a scratch-off ticket (one for $1000 and one for $900).
I assume that both of these are not coincidence and are some type of game / ploy to raise awareness for something.

The infamous 'secret status updates to raise awareness for something even though nobody knows what we are talking about' tactic. Always makes a lot of sense.

Dumping cool water on your head in 90+ degrees doesn't seem like a punishment. Let's start this back up in February for black history month for a charity to help needy minorities and see who will take hypothermia or donate.

Re: Official LGP Facebook Complaint Thread
I got burned yesterday by the "i think i'm in love with someone; what should i do?" that triggers a breast cancer awareness thing. Really annoying. Making it worse was that the friend (female) who posted it just got divorced, so this was a case of me thinking "argh, why are you doing this again, because you always do this and wind up with terrible choices...but at the same time, you're a good friend so I'll support you." Silly me.PensFanInDC wrote:The infamous 'secret status updates to raise awareness for something even though nobody knows what we are talking about' tactic. Always makes a lot of sense.

Same happened to me a few months ago. A woman with about 8 kids posted she was pregnant. I gave a weak "congrats" and then was called a sucker later.

Since it has spread to international personalities, I cannot escape this thing. First week or so, it was maybe 1 or 2 a day. Now, no joke, I'm getting maybe 15-20 a day.shafnutz05 wrote:Honestly, yes, it is. I've never seen a phenomenon like this in all my years on the Interwebs. Anthony Bourdain accepted and nominated Eric Ripert, who accepted and nominated René Redzepi. I follow all three of those guys on the Facebooks, so there was three just there.
Just watched F1 driver Fernando Alonso in the paddock at Spa-Francorchamps accept the challenge. He nominated Ferrari president Luca Montezemolo, Flavio Briatore and Placido Domingo.

The kid said this:Crankshaft wrote:To those that have been critical of the ice bucket challenge, check out this video. After about 2 minutes after the actual "challenge", you can really tell how important this movement has been for someone who actually has ALS. Although it might be stupid to you, it has been important to a lot of people.

The fear that these people go through each day and how literally every single day is physically harder than the day before, the fact that these stupid little 30 second videos can lift their spirits goes a long way."You have no idea how every single challenge makes me feel - lifts my spirits, lifts every single ALS patient’s spirits. You are really truly making a difference and we are so grateful."

Re: Official LGP Facebook Complaint Thread
Co-worker and I were ruminating on how the IBC thing is a real case of lightning in a bottle. They've rebranded the disease and updated it from a man who's been dead for seventy years to a more modern context. Seriously....... for the past three weeks, no one is saying 'Lou Gherig's disease'. It's ALS.
It sounds crass to call that 'rebranding', I know. But that's been one of the net effects of this campaign.
Makes you wonder if other medical research charities can come up with something as effective. I somehow don't think a 'use a condom during anonymous sex with a stranger' challenge for AIDS awareness will work.

Re: Official LGP Facebook Complaint Thread
To point: Donations since the IBC thing started have just surpassed $50 million. That's well over double what the ALSA took in for all of 2014.

I always wanted to start a "Make a Millionaire" project whereby people would donate whatever they wanted to make someone a millionaire.

Re: Official LGP Facebook Complaint Thread
Now here come the posts saying they won't do IBC because some ALS research uses embryonic stem cells. To keep the waive of having fun while giving to charity, unless you are one of those ******* who are dumping water on your head because its cool right now and aren't donating, identify another worthy charity and maybe that cause goes viral?

Really shocked that the ALS thing went as viral and far-reaching as it did.
Then again, in today's social media driven society where everyone is screaming for attention through likes and comments, I guess I shouldn't be too surprised. Great marketing effort by whoever came up with it. I'd expect to see similar campaigns attempt to take-off.

I think it just started as a challenge, no charity attached. I remember over the winter/early spring there was something similar. Not sure how the ALS Association got involved but kudos for them for turning it into a good cause.

Twitter has a Discover and Activity tab, why in the world are they putting tweets that people I follow also follow or favorite in my Home tab? Isn't that what the other two tabs are for?

For some reason my wife didn't think I should participate in that challenge. Maybe peel a banana? Actually, ice cold showers would have worked on that too.tifosi77 wrote:I somehow don't think a 'use a condom during anonymous sex with a stranger' challenge for AIDS awareness will work.

Blame the people you follow:DelPen wrote:Twitter has a Discover and Activity tab, why in the world are they putting tweets that people I follow also follow or favorite in my Home tab? Isn't that what the other two tabs are for?
http://thenextweb.com/twitter/2014/08/2 ... l-feature/" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;Twitter recently began adding tweets to your timeline that have been favorited by people you follow. The decision has been a controversial one, but it looks like it’s here to stay. Twitter has now formally changed its definition of your home timeline to note that it will add in content that it thinks you’ll want to see.
