A young boy accidently killed himself after he lost control of an uzi a few years ago. It's like letting a 15 year old learn to drive using a Ferrari on the Autobahn.

When my wife shot the DE50 we loaded the rounds in the magazine one at a time just in case she dropped the damn thing behind her.

There's a video on YouTube of the incident that goes until the point where she begins to lose control. The instructor was standing beside her and actually appeared to be a bit in front of her, which was obviously moronic. Really feel for the little girl. Its impossible to not be traumatized for a long time after something like that.

Not to be all liberal, but I think there is something wrong with teaching as 9 year old how to use an automatic weapon which she isn't physically capable of controlling.

Ah, but it had been switched to automatic from semi automatic. That is part of the safety issue that I was speaking of. You teach her to use the weapon in semi-auto so she gets a feel for it. Then, when the time is right (and age has nothing to do with it), you switch it to fully auto.

Yeah, probably would have been more prudent to 'teach' with a Ruger .22 pistol. But it's not 'cool.' Hell, anything single shot would've been suffecient. I know Marines I wouldn't trust with full auto.

I agree with Dodint. Start her with a .22 and work up. There's no reason to put a weapon that powerful in the hands of a 9 year old who isn't capable of safely handling it.

I think it's specific to each person. I've met some 11 year olds that can use a fully auto AK-47 with no issues (in the prone position). Personally I don't feel comfortable firing fully auto while standing myself. I've only done it a few times and won't stand until I am comfortable.

Obviously this girl should not have been firing the weapon. I am not pointing a finger at anyone. The bottom line is this:

Really feel for the little girl. Its impossible to not be traumatized for a long time after something like that.

I have a 9mm Tec-9. The large frame absorbs a lot of the recoil, but I'm not sure I'd shoot it in full auto except maybe from the hip. The largeness of the gun, without a stock, actually makes it more difficult to control when shooting consecutive shots. I have not modified mine to be fully automatic by switching to an open bolt, and I won't, so it's academic. I could probably bump fire it, but I'm not a tool.

For clarity, I'm fine with her shooting single shot so long as she can hold the weapon up. But full auto in the standing is nutty.

An 11-year old is allowed to hunt legally in PA w/ a mentor. There appears to be no limit for the youth hunter on the type of rifle used when hunting: shotguns, high powered rifles, .22's, etc. They can use the same guns the rest of us can (no semi's).

The mistake here was giving this girl the Uzi with more than one bullet at a time.

Everyone's solution to bad things happening is more licenses and regulations. Let's just regulate everything until only safety exists. We'll get there someday.

None of the articles I've seen elaborate on the experience of the girl, if any. A lot of the articles make it sound like this girl was receiving in-depth firearms instruction, but that's not really the case. This is a range where people can rent various full autos and try them out. It's less of a formal range and more of a thrill ride. Her parents simply paid for her to have a go at the Uzi. It wasn't a formal training session.

I think people who don't like guns are having a more visceral reaction to this because a gun is involved, but I don't see this as really being any different than many other potentially dangerous activities parents let their kids do under adult supervision. How many parents have let their children try out bungee jumping, or parasailing, or let them ride ATVs or jet skis, or race go-karts, or other similar stuff?
