It would not surprise me at all. The guy basically freelances as a firearms instructor so he spends a lot of time on the road, wouldn't be surprised if he has Sirius. Or it could have been one of his students recounting it, as I did. It stuck with me because the guy was really upset while telling the tale.

Wow, that's........ the dude on the radio was having a hard time getting the words out of his mouth after he started talking about it. It wasn't even the focus of his call, he brought the story up in answering a question posed by the host in response to his initial comment. But once he started telling the story of his divorce........ let's just say it was clear how he felt about his ex-wife's attorney.

Yeah, it's probably him. I could dig through my file and pull his name but I doubt you would remember it. I used to have his card on my fridge but I think I gave it away to someone as a recommendation.

Either that or I heard the same call and I'm screwing with you. :pop:

The fact that I had to stop and consider if you made up the name "Smerconish" should be comfort enough that I'm not pulling your leg. ;)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_co ... icide_rate

I found this interesting. With all our guns and murders I really thought the U.S. murder rate would be much higher. UK is at 1.0 and Canadia at 1.6. Not that 4.7 for the US is good, but certainly not what the media would lead you to believe it'd be given how completely and absurdly dangerous everything is with every kid in school carrying a gun.

Imagine if we didn't count Detroit towards that number, which has 47 per 100,000. Or DC, who has some of the strictest gun laws in the country. Guess those work well

This puts a completely different spin on the concept of "missing a high note."

Rural King had a 48 gun safe on sale for $500 last week. I really want one for christmas, but 48 guns is just a bit much... i mean, I'd buy the thing, and accept the challenge to fill it, and my wife would not be happy. The thing was like 4 feet wide for pete's sake!!

Those capacity numbers for safes are based on plain rifles without scopes. But if any of the rifles you want to store are scoped, have pistol grips, have attached bipods, or wear other accessories, then they will use more than one slot. Plus, the 48-gun number includes using both sides of the safe for rifles. Most safes come with two or three shelves and give you the option of "all rifles" or "half shelves and half rifles." If you want to have the shelves on one side to hold your handguns, jewelry, documents, or other valuable stuff, then that cuts the rifle capacity of the safe in half. So if you go with half shelves and own scoped hunting rifles and ARs with pistol grips, that "48-gun" safe might only hold a dozen such rifles. This is the reason why pretty much every source I was looking at back when I was safe shopping recommended buying the biggest safe you can afford. Owning one huge safe is better than having to buy a second one when the first one fills up.

I like my safe. It's probalby only a 12 rifle safe, but I use it mostly for pistols so it suits me. I want to make some custom shelves for it eventually.

Put a shelf in there and keep other things than just guns. But always get the biggest safe that will fit where you want to put it and that you can afford.

Good advice. Go as large as you can. Besides guns, ours houses other important items and documents that we want to safeguard.

Just make sure you bolt it to the floor, and well. If thieving bastages can tip a safe over, they're in it in no time flat.

Well, finally took my hunter safety course today. Been around guns for years but never actually took the course. My father-in-law loves hunting, and had two daughters that never remotely caught the bug. Should be some good bonding time in NY next weekend

My buddy sells American Security safes at his parent's hardware business and offered me up a 24 gun American Security safe that he sells for $1794 for $1155. This is a tad out of my price range but he claims these are the best you can buy. Any thoughts on them?

I'm wary of keeping docs (deeds, passports, Social Security cards insurance policies, etc) in something that isn't portable. My concern isn't the aforementioned thieving bastages as much as it is fire/earthquake/natural disaster/bug out shenanigans/etc.

I took it when I was like 12 or 13. (Whatever the youngest age was/is) I remember they wanted to demonstrate how powerful a rifle was, so they shot a watermelon with a .30-06 and the damn thing practically exploded.

I keep my docs in a small fire safe, as you said, hand carryable. My gun safe isn't rated for a high level of fire.

Mark Owen, the ex-SEAL and author of 'No Easy Day', has a signature series carbine. It's a cobble of different components from a variety of several manufacturers.

And it can be yours for the low price of $4,595.00.

Accessories (NVG, optics, etc)? Add them all and it's a cool $15,249.00

AMSEC gun safes are supposed to be really good safes, and they have a reputation as one of the top brands out there. They're much better than my Cannon safe. If money were no issue I would have bought an AMSEC BF series safe in a heartbeat. For comparison, my Cannon CA33 weighs about 730 lbs. empty. The AMSEC BF6030, which is slightly smaller than my safe, weighs 1,036 lbs. empty. But is also costs about $1,000 more.
