Re: Where are my Gun Owners?

Post by tifosi77 »

As much as I love living CA, situations like this really make me question if it's worth it.

I've posted here before that my father-in-law has said he's going to will all his firearms to me when he passes. Now, it's morbid enough thinking about that when he mentions it at the Thanksgiving dinner table... but add in the complication that I can legally only take possession of about half his collection. I know I can't take his AR, and I'm not sure I can take the M1 (which I don't even really want to shoot, I just want to keep it and take care of it), plus there are a bunch of pre-roster handguns in his collection. They literally live the next state over, but it's like I'm importing from some third world Asian country or something.

The M1 should be fine, no detachable magazine, 8 round capacity, no collapsable stock, only thing that makes it extra super deadly is the bayonet lug.

I didn't know if there was some stupid ban on ex-military surplus weapons, or if I would have to register it as a curio piece. There is absolutely no rhyme or reason to the gun laws here.

That said, I wish to amend my previous statement. I do want to shoot the M1 at least once to hear that *ting* when the clip ejects.

Just keep your thumb clear when loading. The bite of an M1 is a lesson most often learned the hard way.

Just when you thought 223/5.56 ammo was coming down in price... ATF is seeking to reclassify SS109/M855 ammo and ban it's sale and manufacture.

I'm thinking about getting a small revolver to carry. Porbably a .38. Any recommendations in the $200-$300 price range? I'm okay with used, obviously.

Revolvers are nice because they don't rely on springs to load the ammo. They can sit for decades and never fail.
Revolvers do not leave shell casings at crime scenes.

Those are the two good things about revolvers.

I bought a Ruger 9mm pistol last year. Love it at the shooting range but it's too big to carry comfortably. I thought it might be nice to get a revolver this time if I'm getting a second handgun.

Which Ruger? We have an LC9 and I like it a lot. It's my summer concealment pistol of choice. The rest of the time I carry an M9 concealed. I'm a big guy. ;)

I'm just kidding. Buy whatever you're comfortable with, that's most important. I just don't understand the snub nose revolver for anything other than plugging someone in the gut.

It's interesting that you don't like carrying the Ruger 9, but are looking at a revolver as a CCW option. I would think the wheelgun would be more awkward.

No issues with my Taurus 651. I like the lack of printing with snub nose revolvers as long as you either have internal hammer or in this case a shrouded hammer which is basically extrenal but filed down so you can go single action but it won't snag. Only negative is 5 rounds and carrying speed clips is weird. I would also recommend to get a revolver that will also shoot .357. I have never shot .357 out of this because it will hurt, a lot, but it's nice to have the option if that's the only ammo I can find in a pinch.

Brand new they run about $350, used about $100 less.

Two things, it's against the Geneva convention to shoot people with armor piercing rounds, the military uses this in the field, wouldn't this open up the US for war crimes? And does this affect all .223/5.56? If not wouldn't production just shift to bullets not classified as armor piercing and since the production line would essentially be the same costs for most ammo should be fine?

Chaper than dirt though already gouging...again.

Kinda thought the same thing. I agree the Ruger 9mm is a bit large (assuming you mean SR9) as an EDC but a 38 special isn't going to be much different of a feel. If you want something very small, go with an LCP380. It's too small for me though and the slide bites like a SOB. My carry weapon of choice is a Taurus PT740 with a N82 tactical holster.

Hollow points are also banned for military use by international accords (which predate Geneva by a long time).

Altho, dodint made a funny point a while back. Yes, it's against Geneva to use AP rounds against human targets. But you can use them against 'equipment'..... like body armor. :face:

Hard to go wrong with a S&W Airweight. I'd go with either the Model 642 (no external hammer) or the Model 638 (shrouded hammer). I have a 642, and I know at least two other guys who own 642s. There should be plenty around used, and they aren't too expensive new. The Ruger LCR is supposed to be good as well, if you can find one in your price range.

I would not get a .357 model. These guns aren't too fun to shoot in .38 Special, and there's no way I would want to fire off a round of .357 in something weighing less than a pound.

If they do in fact figure out how to fire the thing they will most likely destory it. NJ is a **** disgrace right up there with MD in trampeling 2nd Ammendment rights.

They're just banning the M855 version, no? The XM193 (for which I have about 3,000 rounds stashed) will still be legal...

SS109 (Armor piercing steel tip) and the M855. I could understand the SS109. But the M855 is a really weak and humane round. There is a reason the military uses it.
