I think the ‘fired up’ is because the Jake deal gets worse as time goes by.KG wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:10 pmWe will probably get several picks for Gryz and Beauvillier and Acciari by Friday. Have to play it all out. Schenn they can also get futures for. Board is getting fired up over a 4th round pick. We have a bazillion picks already.Antonio wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:09 pmNo we sent OUT the 4th. Yesterday we had:
Desjardins & Bunting
Today we have:
Schenn & Novack and a 4th and 5th rd pick.
Not one player mentioned above is critical as we rebuild or retool. So does it really matter much what it does this year or even next? We suck and will continue to as we should
From an on ice side we obviously didn’t upgrade or move the needle but we didn’t down grown much either and got younger in Novack who’s easier to flip next year. And we got two picks and Luke Schenn can be flipped for a 3rd as he as more value the Desjardins.
I think this is more than decent asset management

Aweee I didn’t see we shipped out a 4th. Definitely changes the dynamic a bit. However if we get a 2nd for Schenn then it looks better and I think people are undervaluing Novack some.

Bunting for Novak + Schenn is already getting robbed, in my eyes.
I'll wait to roast Dubas until after the deadline.

I liked Bunting, but I don't necessarily see these moves as bad. I'd like to think something else is coming. But even if not it's at worst a parallel move if not an incremental improvement.Puck-Lurker wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:07 pmDon't have to see the entire chess game to call out a bad move.Michael74 wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:05 pmDon't you think you should wait a few hours before concluding anything. We're paying a 4th rounder for the privilege of this...?!
Whiffed big time if this sticks and nothing further is done with this.
But I'll happily see wait and see where this goes, I'm not encouraged thusfar

Lizotte was playing at almost a half a goal per game pace before Sullivan decided to move him to the 4th line. He had 6 goals, 9 points in 9 games after coming back from the 2nd concussion.largegarlic wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:12 pmYeah, I don't see the point of the deal for Novak and Schenn. Neither is young (Schenn is much older obviously), cheap, or all that good. Novak might be a decent 3C, but Lizotte probably would be around the same level as him if Sullivan played him there.
Edit: Looking at Novak's stats from the last couple years and not just this one, maybe it looks more ok. He had over 40 points in each of the last 2 seasons and 17 and 18 goals, respectively. That's probably better numbers than Lizotte would put up at 3C. Maybe Novak is just having a down year this year, like most everyone else on the Preds.
Novak is fine in a vacuum, but again, Novak, Glass, Hayes, Acciari, Tomasino. That's a lot of average players. If we are able to dump Acciari, Hayes, and Glass before next season, I'll like the trade more.
I'll come back to all this on Friday. Waiting to see what else plays out and what our lineup looks like Friday night or Sunday night.

Novak is a solid player. 45 points last season in 71 games. 43 points in 51 games the previous year. Quality center that we don't have.

He's never won 45 percent of his faceoffs in a season. Sully isn't playing him at CKG wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:21 pm

Maybe Rakell replacement? Who knows. Bottom line is Novak is a better overall player than Bunting.thehockeyguru wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:25 pmHe's never won 45 percent of his faceoffs in a season. Sully isn't playing him at CKG wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:21 pm

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
I dont mind these trades and more coming anyway..
but I do like Novak, could be solid for Pens, as LW not center, smart player, great skater.. new LW for Geno at the moment. Younger than Bunting, cheaper..
Schenn older than Descharnais, but tougher to play against.. can still be flipped tommorow for pick.
Even if they both stay, they dont move needle much, but we got better and retool continues

Agreed, I think this is very good value as is. That said, I'm not so sure Schenn will stay here.KG wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:30 pmMaybe Rakell replacement? Who knows. So we got Novak for Bunting which most would agree is a win for us.
We pay 4th for Schenn with no retention from NSH. But since we can retain - we maybe can get a 2nd for him in a flip. I say we flip him regardless

Not sure about this trade. They're about the same age, about the same stats. What does Novak do that Bunting can't? At face value, I don't see how this makes the Penguins better and not the kind of trade to give up a 4th round pick in a deep draft.BlackNGold4Life wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 9:36 pmSo we got Novak for Bunting which most would agree is a win for us.

I just hope we trade Rakell for a tidy sum. This is a golden opportunity, these are crucial times for this GM and this teams future. Feel pretty confident we'll come out of this deadline very well.

If Dubas can't move Rakell in the next 2 days, that puts an enormous amount of pressure on him at the draft and this summer to make more impactful changes.Michael74 wrote: Wed Mar 05, 2025 10:44 pmI just hope we trade Rakell for a tidy sum. I get the issue with schenns age, however isn’t he the type of player we’ve been wanting on the back end?? Physical and tough as nails??

Re: Penguins Trade Deadline: Buyers and Sellers?
Dubas answered questions via email after the trades. The highlights of his answers (from DKSports, Kingerski, and Yohe):
--He really viewed the two moves as one...Desharnais, Bunting and the 4th for Schenn, Novak, and a 5th
--Said Novak had been on the priority list for a few years. He's younger than Bunting, he's cheaper than Bunting, he has an extra year of term than Bunting had, and they feel he is primarily a center, which they need more depth at that position.
--Was asked if the intent is to flip Schenn....Nope. He said they feel Schenn's "defensive play, character, leadership, toughness, and spirit are what we need here to help push our program through this phase and preserve our culture and standards as we work to return to contention." Dubas also has a long history with Schenn from his time in Toronto.
--Was asked why Bunting didn't fit. Said he wouldn't say he didn't fit, talked about him coming in at a tough time, transitioning from playoff team that went all in every year. Said he started off slow this year, but in the end, he was key in Nashville wanting to do this deal. Mentioned his long relationship with him (from Toronto).
--Didn't tip his hand on anything else but said they are positioned well for the next few days, and into the draft and the summer.
Novak is drawing rave reviews. NHL Network guys said they aren't sure why he hasn't taken the next step in Nashville, as they see him as a potential 50-60 point player. Saw some saying he's a #2 center on a bad or average team or an exceptional #3 center on just about any team.
The comment I didn't like by someone, don't remember who, was talking about Dubas going after younger players. 27 is not what I had in mind for going after younger players. I think of 24 and under as younger players that should be targeted.
Two more days to see how the rest unfolds.

Hm, interesting to hear, that Novak is planned as center for Pens, not LW.. because thru his career so far his faceoff numbers arent that good. Maybe they will now move Geno to LW with Novak at C on 2nd line..

Couldve done as much when we still had Bunting. Glass does a lot of things well as a center.Pens4Life wrote: Thu Mar 06, 2025 2:05 amHm, interesting to hear, that Novak is planned as center for Pens, not LW.. because thru his career so far his faceoff numbers arent that good. Just doesn't score which happens to be important in this game, with this team defense, defenders and this goaltending.
As for younger... When JMFCarter left, we added Hayes (getting a few picks to do so). That was us getting 'younger', too. 57 year old out and 52 year old in. I mean it's technically younger... Which isnt the best kind of younger
